What to Know

Critics Consensus

The new-look Annie hints at a progressive take on a well-worn story, but smothers its likable cast under clichés, cloying cuteness, and a distasteful materialism.

Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association You may grimace at some points, but kids might like it anyway. Mar 7, 2017 Full Review Brandon Ambrosino Vox There's nothing wrong with reworking the score of Annie -- as this film does -- but too often, the movie seems a little embarrassed to be a musical at all, making it seem as if it's having a crisis of confidence. Sep 26, 2016 Full Review Jim Slotek Toronto Sun The song selection and its presentation seems out of his control. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 9, 2015 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine This film’s biggest mistake is that it brings Annie into the 21st century, only to discover that in this century she doesn’t actually have anything relevant to say. Rated: 4/10 Jun 25, 2024 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Visually, Gluck keeps things zipping along with clever use of reflections and a snappy 21st century take on a car chase... Braxton M A very good remake of the beloved musical. Great acting and singing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Grace k Despite many criticism from adults i would consider it my favourite kids film. One of its standout features is the updated soundtrack, featuring vibrant new songs by Sia and Greg Kurstin, alongside reimagined classics. This musical evolution injects fresh energy into the story, appealing to both new viewers and long-time fans. Plus, Jamie Foxx as Will Stacks is way more interesting than the original Daddy Warbucks. He’s not just a rich guy; he actually goes through some real growth, which makes the story feel deeper. Rose Byrne is great as Grace, too—she adds a fun dynamic to the whole thing. The vibrant shots of New York City really bring the story to life. The bright colors and lively streets make it feel like a character in itself, capturing both the struggles and joys of city life. The film does a fantastic job of showcasing the city’s energy, which totally enhances the whole experience. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review TROY S The best part of this movie is song Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review F r This movie is the best movie I have ever watched. The actors are all deserving of Oscars and I cannot believe how bad these reviews are. Quvenzhané Wallis is one of the best actresses I have seen act in a musical and it is a great modern adaptation of the original movie. I am hurt by how low the ratings are on a movie where Jamie Foxx is an icon, and think this is a must see. Do not skip over this on family movie night! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review freya n I would recommend to watch Annie purely for the soundtrack, what a fantastic re-make!
