The cast is great, with Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, and Ed Harris all giving great performances. You really feel the stoic maturity and creative problem-solving ingenuity of their characters. Tom Hanks is really likable as the head astronaut. Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton share great chemistry as the emotional foils to Tom Hanks (still very professional and essential to the crisis, but slightly more emotional and vulnerable). Ed Harris is great as the determined and no-nonsense head of the mission control room keeping everything together. The film is excellently directed by Ron Howard. The soundtrack is ethereal with its soft choir soundtrack, particularly when zero gravity first sets in and during the final splash down. But unlike most 90s films, the scenes are allowed to breathe with plenty of silence to let the drama and atmosphere set in when it needs to. It keeps a sense of realism during tense scenes and keeps the grandiose music for the spectacle scenes. The film is very methodical and detailed oriented, feeling very grounded and true to fact of how it all went down. It really makes you feel like you're trapped in the space shuttle with these 3 astronauts figuring out a way back home safely. "Houston, we have a problem" is such a classic line and really sets the tone of the rest of the movie as the stakes remain high for the remainder of the runtime. Despite the high stakes, there is still plenty of levity carefully sprinkled in, such as explaining how astronauts use the bathroom or eat/drink in zero gravity, as well as the American public's immediate boredom with moon landings just ONE YEAR after the first moon launch (once the spiteful cold war Motivations are over, what's left but hope for spectacle and novelty for the average American attention span, I suppose). There are plenty of great debates from the characters about calculations to get the astronauts back home with simulated flight tests at home to figure out the logistics. We get some clever ideas to bring the astronauts home, such as the moon's orbit or making carbon filters out of mundane items inside the space shuttle. I love the line "We just put Sir Isaac Newton in the driver's seat". The film strikes that careful balance between harrowing and hopeful. It celebrates the endless possibilities of human creativity and cooperative problem solving. But it earns that success by showing every step of the process and how hard it is to operate even the most routine of NASA flight missions and the sacrifices that are made to achieve those missions. It's an excellent space film and easily one of the best movies about NASA, period.
