Luke W The Art of Pain explores an intriguing premise: that great art comes from great pain. This indie is unmistakably a dark comedy and never takes itself too seriously. The film is packed with snark, satire, and over-the-top characters — including Marcus, a wannabe ninja who meets a broke painter, Jack, after taking a job at an arthouse movie theater. Marcus makes Jack his project, systematically trying to ruin his life — alienating him from his parents, stealing his girlfriend, and eventually plotting murder. The Art of Pain is bold in its ambition and takes a lot of swings; even when it doesn’t always land, it keeps its unpredictable, one-of-a-kind energy. Anyone who’s lived the down-and-out artist life can relate to the struggle of trying to create, express yourself, and prove your worth while grinding away at a low-wage, dead-end job. You’ll never find another film quite like this. It features a banging zombie dream sequence set inside the theater and surprisingly action-packed kung-fu scenes with ninjas. All the cinematic tropes loved by the theater’s employees start bleeding into real life — right in the heart of Chicago. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member ridiculous plot coupled with bad acting and storyline...and this apparently got a few awards...wonder what the awards-people were smoking... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Cleverly entertaining in a few places (the "Scarlet Letter" confrontation, for instance), but a meandering and disconnected script made for a dismal viewing experience.
