Tony Rayns Time Out 06/24/2006
Wise's film is overlong, sometimes over-emphatic, and it has a staggeringly misjudged ending. But it's also notable for centering on the emotional plight of the paranormal malarkey. Go to Full Review

The acting of Marsha Mason, Anthony Hopkins and debuting Susan Swift are the major assets (poor John Beck is good, but out of his league). The story is intriguing all the way, even if it's never resolved. Go to Full Review

It turns absurd in the second hour, starting with a trial in which the notion of reincarnation is placed on the stand -- next to this, even Santa’s courtroom appearance in Miracle on 34th Street looks as grounded in reality as the Nuremberg trials. Go to Full Review

Superb performances from Marsha Mason and Anthony Hopkins help ground the supernatural story in genuine human emotion. Go to Full Review

While some of the acting is overwrought and the story occasionally grates, this choice adds extra layers to what is a fascinating, intelligent and thoughtful psychological drama. Go to Full Review

CodyZamboni Z Oct 4 Watchable quasi thriller, A lot more emotional than I thought it would be, i admit I teared up a few times when girl Ivy cries for her daddy, and when Anthony Hopkin tears up, There are some creepy moments in the first half hour, but soon turns academic, lecturing the audience on reincarnation via a court trial, That said, the performances sell this movie, especially Marsha Mason Hopkins and Susan Smith as Ivy. Their plight is gripping and heartfelt, The ending is bittersweet. See more Roger R Jul 13 The book is very good with interesting education regarding Hinduism and reincarnation. It is not really a horror story. The movie, however, deletes many of the levels in the book's narrative, squashing it down to a basic rip-off of The Exorcist at times and family drama at others. It all ends in a courtroom in both mediums of entertainment, with the book coming across as an "advertisement" for Hinduism. The movie, though, is just exploitation and sensationalism to (at the time of release) sell tickets. Good cast, fine direction, but mostly mediocre. Read the book instead (or look up reincarnation and Hinduism on google). See more Farah R @Farah 10/25/2024 Audrey Rose is a discombobulating mess of religion and the paranormal, a peculiar film with an even weirder concept that never settles on a clear message. Anthony Hopkins and the other cast members did a great job making their acting very convincing, but it couldn't save this psychological thriller from foundering. Big questions about our mortality and where we go when we die. See more jimmy b 07/25/2024 When the telephone rings, which it does quite often, you know bad news and bad acting is in store. However, Marsha Mason makes an attempt to save the film with copius tears at times. See more Read all reviews
