Critics Consensus

Not quite as good as the original and has some dark subject material that might not be appropriate for children.

Rob Humanick Slant Magazine Carries its predecessor's torch into darker, quixotic territories, bursting at the seams with folkloric witticism and hellzapoppin' imagery. Rated: 4/4 Nov 12, 2012 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Darker than the original, not for very young kids. Rated: 2/5 Sep 16, 2010 Full Review Pat Graham Chicago Reader It's George Miller's masterpiece, maybe even the best commercial film of 1998. Jan 29, 2010 Full Review Wesley Lovell Cinema Sight “Babe: Pig in the City” is a wonderful family motion picture that touches various topics, but doesn’t live up to the power and overwhelming brilliance of the original. Rated: 3/4 Nov 26, 2022 Full Review Walter Chaw Film Freak Central It's a bracing shot of inspiration: the darker it gets, the more important kindness becomes. It could've been made yesterday. Audience Member The sequel lacks the charm of the first movie and is actually quite dark. I would skip this one. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Pillow R Far too dark for the children Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Ethan G As far as unnecessary sequels go, "Babe: Pig in the City" is decent enough. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review A. Darryl M I've never understood the hatred people have for this film. It's dark, to be sure, and surreal in a way that most adults probably don't have the time for, but it's also a clever sequel that places the unambiguously kind and steady-hearted title character in a setting in which shades of grey dominate the morals of everyone around. This is easily one of my five favorite movies of all time (something I share with, oddly enough, Tom Waits). At its heart, it's a simple story about doing the right thing, and navigating the darkness and ambiguity of the adult world by holding on to the kindness and steadfastness of youth. I feel like we really should be talking about Dr. George Miller when we talk about greatest film directors of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Alec B I still can't believe that a G rated kids film has; a dog hanging by it's neck from a bridge then nearly drowns, use of the word 'pussy' as an insult, a fire started in a children's hospital, a clown that entertains sick kids die, a puppy telling how its previous owners put him in a bag and threw him in a river, a strip search, a handicapped dog getting dragged behind a truck, then twitching on the ground after he crashes, and an adorable baby monkey that nearly plunges to his death. But all that makes it just so awesome. The best children's movies are the ones that traumatize, because you just remember them so well later in life. As for looking at the film on a purely artistic basis, I thinks its just as charming as the original. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review Harrison D This Movie really Sucks. I Fucking hate It! Fuck Babe: Pig in the City!!! the movie is shitty & garbage! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
