Movie Info

When single executive Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey) decides the time is right to finally have a baby, she hires a working-class woman (Amy Poehler) from South Philadelphia to act as her surrogate mother. However, Kate's careful planning goes out the window when the woman shows up on her doorstep needing a place to live. A comic battle of wills breaks out between the pair as they prepare for the blessed event and try not to kill one another in the process.

In a movie starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, I assumed that it had been written by Tina Fey and/or Amy Poehler, so I was surprised to discover during the end credit crawl that it was written by the director Michael McCullers. Surprised because of his on-target capturing of both female sensibility and Tina Fey-style humor. She plays a character, career-minded health food chain VP Kate Holbrook, not far removed from her 30 Rock alter-ego Liz Lemon, while Poehler plays surrogate mom wannabe Angie to her strength of mouthy mania often seen during her SNL days. The film isn't fall-down hilarious, in fact co-star Dax Shepard gets the most laughs as Angie's idiot loser boyfriend, but unlike most comedies that sputter it remembers to develop the story to conclusion, thereby delivering consistent entertainment value for all 100 minutes. That's helped by a smashing supporting cast including Greg Kinnear, Steve Martin, and Sigourney Weaver! There are also some nifty turns in the story, one I saw coming but two others I didn't. Baby Mama champions modern society's alternative parenting options while simultaneously finding the absurdities inherent in the situation, led by two of today's leading comediennes in what I'd describe as a 'compassionate comedy.'

It was okay, funny but nothing great, so I give it 3 stars.

There's no laughs, zero, nada. I have no problem at drooling over Tina Fey for 90-minutes but there's more laughs in a minute of '30 Rock' than there are in this entire movie.
