Critics Consensus

It's good to have Diaz and Foxx back, but they deserve a warmer welcome than this rote action-comedy.

Ben Travis Empire Magazine A solid action-comedy that proves just how much we’ve missed Cameron Diaz in the last ten years. Next time don’t leave it so long, eh? Rated: 3/5 Feb 4, 2025 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times Back in Action epitomises the Netflix category of “casual viewing”, ie stuff you can have on in the background while you’re washing up. Rated: 1/5 Feb 4, 2025 Full Review Kristy Puchko Mashable Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx team up for an action-comedy designed meticulously for Gen X Jan 30, 2025 Full Review Nicholas Bell Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) Seth Gordon's latest attempt at high profile frivolity falls short of the meager promise in its generic title with this boring misfire cobbling together recycled elements of black action choreography and hokey comedy. Rated: 1.5/5 Mar 20, 2025 Full Review Lisa Johnson Mandell AtHomeInHollywood.com Regardless of the fact that this Netflix action comedy isn’t the most original movie you’ve ever seen, Back in Action throws an amusing curve or two, and the clever teaming of Cameron Diaz with Jamie Foxx is fun and refreshing. Jason P This movie is definitely meh. Some parts were funny enough that my wife and I laughed, but that was mostly the first half when things just started rolling. By the time Meryl Streep appears, it starts going downhill. Why does Streep play the same strange, eccentric woman with weird hair? Just about every modern trope is in this movie. Black man/white woman; smart rebellious teen daughter; tech savvy tweeter son; parents trying to be cool; dorky guy who comes through in a pinch. There are plenty of plot holes and multiple times when the characters had to know something they couldn’t have known in order for the plot to happen. Don’t pay too much attention to this movie or you won’t like it as much. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Jay W "Back in Action" is a direct to Netflix movie directed by Seth Gordon. Gordon had previously directed action shows like "Night Agent” but has more experience directing comedy shows like "Goldbergs", and "The Office". This movie is an action comedy that blends Gordon's two styles together. This is a very average Netflix film. It takes two big name actors and puts them together in a very by-the-numbers spy romp. Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx are very good together, they are very likable, and you root for them to succeed. The kids are pretty annoying. The action is fine. The comedy is pretty good. Overall, it is a fine, disposable Netflix film. Nothing wrong with that, just nothing great. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review Nicholas R Basic Netflix action movie🫤 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Charlie G The biggest problem with Jackie Chan movies is they spend hours hitting each other with no deaths, knockout or bleeding. This movie starts out following the same formula. Every scene is a cliche and boring. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Amy R Fun movie to watch with family. There were a lot of great action scenes, and hilarious moments. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Ray C It was very watchable…a bit of action fun comedy!
