Critics Consensus

It's good to have Diaz and Foxx back, but they deserve a warmer welcome than this rote action-comedy.

Ben Travis Empire Magazine A solid action-comedy that proves just how much we’ve missed Cameron Diaz in the last ten years. Next time don’t leave it so long, eh? Rated: 3/5 Feb 4, 2025 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times Back in Action epitomises the Netflix category of “casual viewing”, ie stuff you can have on in the background while you’re washing up. Rated: 1/5 Feb 4, 2025 Full Review Kristy Puchko Mashable Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx team up for an action-comedy designed meticulously for Gen X Jan 30, 2025 Full Review Samantha Schuster Cinéfilo Serial It's not a memorable film, due to its rather classic and formulaic structure, with some predictable moments. But it manages to entertain the viewer with a well-known and charismatic cast, good action scenes, and well-aimed jokes. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Jul 17, 2025 Full Review Rachel Ho Exclaim! Doesn't blow the lid off the genre like ['Spy Kids'] did nearly a quarter century ago, but it does offer two hours of good-natured laughter and entertaining-enough intrigue. May 14, 2025 Full Review Nicholas Bell Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) Seth Gordon's latest attempt at high profile frivolity falls short of the meager promise in its generic title with this boring misfire cobbling together recycled elements of black action choreography and hokey comedy. Evan G Back in action was a fun movie to watch. Too many times people can't get over themselves. It was entertaining and action packed and funny. Good cast as well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review John T. Definitely more entertaining than I was expecting. The action sequences were cool and Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz are cool together. The plot was basic, but expected for a Netflix action-comedy. I’d probably take off 20 minutes of the run time though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Edwin R Solid action with a few laughs. Nothing special, however. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review Riley S. Despite the nostalgic appeal of seeing Cameron Diaz return to the screen and Jamie Foxx doing his best to carry the chaotic energy, Back in Action never quite lives up to its title. The film juggles action, comedy, and romance but doesn’t quite land any of them with enough confidence. The plot is muddled, the action is uninspired, and the jokes often fall flat. There are a few fun moments and sparks of chemistry between the leads, but they get buried under clunky dialogue and over-the-top set pieces that lack tension or purpose. It wants to be a throwback spy caper and a heartfelt family comedy, but ends up being a mess of tone and pacing. Diaz fans may enjoy seeing her back, but otherwise, this one’s more “off-duty” than back in action. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/23/25 Full Review Melissa R Fun, action packed movie! Perfect for a family movie night (my kids are ages 10 and 12 for reference). We enjoyed it!
