When their boat is sunk while crossing the Timor Sea during World War II, a young troop of Australian soldiers must find a way to survive the harsh seas on a quickly shrinking life raft. Hundreds of miles from anywhere, they must confront interpersonal conflicts, enemy attacks, and the advances of one very large, very hungry great white shark. From Kiah Roache-Turner, director of Wyrmwood and Sting, comes this uniquely terrifying tale.

The strikingly cinematic "Beast of War" delivers everything a genre-lover would want and expect. At the same time, Roache-Turner brings along his own playbook which keeps the movie from simply being more of the same. Go to Full Review

Beast of War is a solid B-movie that’s augmented by practical FX. Even when the characters lean into stereotype or the deaths follow a somewhat predictable pattern, the ~87 minute film doesn’t overstay its welcome. Go to Full Review

rik b @Rikbattaglia 6d Definitely worth watching and a good movie. Finding a decent shark movie to watch is extremely rare, but this is one I would recommend. Performances were solid and the shark effects looked acceptable. See more hip C @hipCRANK Dec 5 A fish in the water story. Go figure. Ever since "Jaws" first made ocean wading a terrifying experience, there have been attempts at shark film magic with little return. The odds aren’t great, the plucky Aussies to give it a spirited go. "Beast of War" pits man, vs monster in a WWII scenario. After a bonding boot camp establishes the cliched characters, we are thrown into a foggy, ominous sea bath soup, with our group of fresh soldiers clinging precariously to what is left of a bombed boat. And if personal clashes aren't enough, a great big white shows up. This is old time filming in a studio tank, negating the usual overblown CG experience. Yay! Young guns battling a young guns eating machine makes for an up close and personal watch, where tension permeates for the duration. The minimalist cinematography is exquisite, and there’s even some old school martyr hero stuff thrown in for classic cinema buffs. This is a decent popcorn munching adventure, and a not too shabby shark flick. See more Peter F Nov 26 It's a decent production, but gave it 2 stars because I don't like gory war movies and I thought this would be more a shark-focused movie. It was just too depressing of a hellscape for me. If you like war movies with a shark thrown in it's not bad. Good acting, but still didn't the reviews it wasn't a mystery or anything at all. See more JOEL S Nov 25 Excellent film, very fresh and novel See more Marc Z @TKDLife Nov 25 The have been a lot of Shark movies since thew legendary JAWS hot theaters 50 years ago. Some are good. Some are horrible. This one is very good. It actually pulls the concept from Jaws in the sense it goes back to a historical episode of World War II and combines the tension of a Great White Shark for a thrilling movie. The movie takes place in Australia/New Zealand in 1942 and it is tight and engaging. One of the strengths of this one is that the filmmakers opted for Practical rather than special effects. They work. Had I seen this in the theaters I would one scared. Worth seeing. See more Ashley R Nov 8 The movie was awesome, visual effects were stunning and the CGI was good. I would highly recommend this movie! See more Read all reviews
