Hector I Sep 20 Fulchi did a lot of things before getting into Giallo. He's a bit like Argento's twin brother, but more psychedelic, more sexual, and more violent. In his first film, we follow two brothers who own a clinic: George and Henry Dumurrier. George's wife, Marta, is sick and quite cantankerous. He is having an affair with a woman named Jane. One day, he learns that his wife has died of an asthma attack and left him a million-dollar inheritance. The insurance company investigates and begins to have suspicions about Marta's death. George and Jane meet Monica, a woman who bears a striking resemblance to his deceased wife Martha. This film is closer to a Hitchcock-style film noir than pure Giallo, but the psychedelic, rather erotic staging and the plot are really enjoyable to follow. There is also the personality of the disturbing Monica and the lesbian scenes, which were quite daring for the time. Jean Sorel shines as George Dumurrier and Marisa Mell as Susan Dumurrier is very beautiful and captivating. See more 06/08/2011 Booooooring. Beautiful actress, though. See more 11/22/2009 Very good Fulci film which showcases that he should not be solely remembered for his more celebrated horror output. See more 08/27/2009 Italian horror maestro Lucio Fulci directed this handsomely-made, but ultimately underwhelming historical drama. Fulci makes good use of his low budget for some effective energy, and there are a handful of strong moments and solid performances - but the story is long-winded and dull, sometimes to the point of incomprehensibility, bogged down by long stretches of dialogue based around supposed historical accuracy. Exploitation fans may find something to appreciate in the filmmaking, but as a whole, it's dull and forgettable. See more 08/17/2009 reportedly fulci's favourite of his own films, BEATRICE CENCI hints at some of the elements that would later come to define him as an artist. i feel like i need to do more to undertstand the climate into which this movie was released, tho, if i am to fully appreciate its impact. TODO: repeated viewings, reread stephen thrower's essay on the film, further research its critiques of the roman catholic church. See more 05/11/2009 Well made and directed 17th century torture film that reminded me of Witchfinder General, Mark of the Devil, and The Devils. Fulci crafts a similar tale of torture, tyrannical fathers/noblemen, and sexual abuse. An exploration of the corrupting force of power and its effect upon not just the masses but the ruler's family and friends as well. An interesting entry in the Fulci oeuvre that fits well with his 60s work while still foreshadowing the madness of the films he will go on to make in the 70s and 80s. See more Read all reviews
