MIRA L The main character who plays Beauty, Gracie Marie Bradley, cannot act. This is supposed to be a movie about an up and coming singer. We never hear Beauty sing. The movie producers didn't even bother to have her lip sync. Although the acting of Niecy Nash and Giancarlo Esposito was excellent, it was not enough to carry the movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/20/23 Full Review Riko Nothing happens in this film. The main character doesn't really struggle to achieve her dreams. She is just smoking and listening to music. No action. Weird writing. Her girlfriend says to break up and then we see them together. Suddenly her girlfriend is in hospital we don't get exactly why. Super slow narrative. Waiting for her to be on stage and shine and sing in the end, but no! There is no singing at all in a film that supposed to be about music. Great disappointment Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/28/22 Full Review Ravon C Where do I start. The girl never sung one song. It was just bad and pointless. I think they wasted money to make this movie. Another thing I keep the subtitles on and noticed at the hospital scene the dad said "he wanted to speak his piece" and not PEACE I was just over the whole movie. Again not worth watching I could go on and on but it was just bad all around honestly and I wasted my life watching it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/23/22 Full Review sonia m This could have been a better movie. The problem is in the script, something is missing. And why can't we hear the singer's voice? That was a big mistake. Besides, the leading actress doesn't show any emotion, that's weird. I really liked the performance of Niecy Nash and Giancarlo Esposito. Sharon Stone is another story, I want to see her in a leading role of a great movie. Ah, the music is wonderful! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Without knowing who the movie was supposed to be about, I was getting pulled into a really intriguing story. But ultimately, I was let down by the abrupt ending and all of the unrealized angles. Artistically however, I was really excited and impressed. Some folks have complained that not hearing the main character sing takes away from the movie, but once you know who the main character is you absolutely do not need to hear her sing. Plus, there's so much other great music in this film. What would have made this film a few Stars better is if the supporting actress was the main character. She's the story we want to know about. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Okay so. First of all. The main character is b e a uuuutiful. And her outfits?? Too good. high-waisted mom-jeans with sweaters. I want that to be my aesthetic but I'm not tall and stick-figured enough. I love her mom as well, played by Niecy Nash. Girlfriend's hair, was not a fan of the rat tails in the back.. Mom's concern for daughter going big = well executed and I liked it. But. Plot with the dad and the son issue: weak and gross. Dad daughter plot: also gross and not properly executed. Both of these plots were poorly executed. Overall weird execution. Even so. I thought it was a cute movie. Until the end. Where I was thinking "okay, I'll finally get to hear her beautiful voice." But we didn't even get that one win. Literally. Cut off the movie RIGHT before the fun part, the climax (which by the way can be AH-MAZING when done RIGHT!!), but this was NOT the right movie to do it with). the flipping climax. Anyways. It was an overall "meh:)" movie with the worst ending. I'd still recommend it. So you can witness a "not-great" movie. That's why I watched it, because at the time that I checked rotten tomaties, it was 20% critics and 0% audience, with 10 critic reviews and <50 audience reviews. Good luck! Kristen Lopez indieWire Dosunmu’s airless directing and Waithe’s thin script only amount to loud allegory that never goes anywhere and drowns out any compelling ideas that might be worth singing. Rated: D+ Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Robert Daniels Polygon Beauty is a staid, soporific story that swims through shallow narrative waters. Jul 6, 2022 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times This semi-true story is ultimately too sketchy to have anything effective to say about Houston, mainstream success or being in the closet. On paper, this movie is really something. Onscreen, it lacks dimension. Jul 1, 2022 Full Review Michael Dequina TheMovieReport.com Ironically, for a story revolving around identity, there is not a solid one in evidence here. Rated: 2/4 Aug 6, 2022 Full Review Rahul Desai News9 Live (India) Beauty features a transformation that's invisible to the naked eye – a girl who is slowly but surely waking up to the endless possibilities of talent and adulthood. Rated: 3/5 Jul 19, 2022 Full Review Leslie Byron Pitt The Playlist The most frustrating thing about “Beauty” is it’s a film that reminds you of other films that are far more compelling... However, the slightness and muddled storytelling of “Beauty” mar a film which at times feels it has something to say. Rated: C- Jul 18, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
