Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Its very frank discussion of sexual violence will be difficult for some viewers but it has important things to say, especially to other survivors and to those who want to learn how to give them the support that they need. Rated: 4/5 Mar 6, 2020 Full Review Jorge Ignacio Castillo Prairie Dog Magazine In the end, Because We Are Girls is about overcoming trauma with others' help and ending traditions that enable predators. All messages worth your attention. Rated: 3/5 Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Michelle da Silva NOW Toronto Too much jumping back and forth between time and perspective distracts from the overall impact of the film's message. Jul 5, 2019 Full Review Ken Eisner Georgia Straight The film's innate humanism, and the thoughtful qualities of its sisterly subjects, emphasize their disturbing past without sensationalizing it. Jul 5, 2019 Full Review Chelsea Phillips-Carr POV Magazine The film does a capable job at what it's doing -- but the repetition of this genre of sexual violence documentary speaks to a stagnation in society, where we are not progressing when it comes to helping and protecting the survivors of assault. donna m Excellent and heartbreaking. Demonstrated how girls/women are sexually victimized by their own culture and that which their parents grew up within. The daughters parents were also victims of their culture, unable and even unwilling to support their daughters and keep them safe, instead of blaming them. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie was so well done and I felt all emotions: happiness, sadness, anger and love. I loved the inside look at a wonderful culture that those who are Punjabi experience along with some of the darker parts of that culture. I pray that these ladies got the closure that they needed from their family. It was hard to see them plead with their parents for support during this hard time and it was also hard to see the parents and the conflict of 100's of years of tradition that stopped them from supporting their daughters as they needed. This was a great movie that I recommend..Great job! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
