Marcus W Very interesting documentary on the original five films and their cultural significance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/16/15 Full Review Wes S A stellar documentary that manages to sum up the Apes legacy (up to 1998) with plenty of facts, clips, and behind the scenes information. While most of the doc is focused on the first film, the sequels still get enough time to pace-fully explain, while shows and spinoff get briefly ran by. A great look at the franchise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/03/14 Full Review Liz K I generally really like documentaries about classic movies, but this was kinda lackluster. It's worth watching once probably, and I do love Roddy McDowall, but I don't feel like I learned anything new, or that it gave me any new insights. The behind the scenes making-of documentaries that are really worth while always leave me loving the movie involved just a little bit more. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/11/14 Full Review Dann M Behind the Planet of the Apes is a fascinating retrospective of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Hosted by Roddy McDowall, this documentary follows the production of the five original Planet of the Apes films and the two spin-off television shows. Loaded with tons of interviews from the casts and crews, including Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Linda Harrison, Richard Zanuck, and John Chambers, a comprehensive insider's perspective is presented. And, the impact and significance of the films are discussed with film historians. Informative and captivating, Behind the Planet of the Apes provides an in-depth look at one of the most influential series of the science fiction genre. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/17/14 Full Review Byron B An excellent exploration of the development of the five film series plus the animated and live-action television spin-offs. Planet of the Apes was one of the earliest franchises to capitalize on merchandizing. Observing the make-up process and early screen tests are especially intriguing. Roddy McDowall hosts and several members of the cast and crew share their insights. Historians and critics talk about how the sci-fi genre allowed the series to explore social issues that otherwise would be too taboo. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/13 Full Review Bjarni Þór K One of the best documentary i've ever seen. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/29/13 Full Review Read all reviews
