Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times A taut, atmospheric if not especially deep thriller ... Jul 31, 2014 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com When does a bad, cheap horror movie becomes something more offensively horrible? When it pegs its generic nonsense on real-life tragedy and becomes exploitation. Rated: 1/4 Jul 25, 2014 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times A below-ground but slightly above average horror movie ... Jul 24, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com This plays like a Plain Jane genre exercise fleshed out with a handful of misplaced, handsome humans. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Scott Weinberg TheHorrorShow As a low-budget disaster thriller, the film works well enough - but it's the commitment the supernatural "question" that makes Beneath worth checking out. Aug 23, 2015 Full Review Betty Jo Tucker ReelTalk Movie Reviews Although the actors and setting seem believable here, 'Beneath' ends up being much too predictable for a horror movie. prawnda s it's a poor man's "the descent", quite literally, since the cast is mostly male and their characters are blue collar workers. still, it's not nearly as bad as it's being reviewed to be. setpieces are pretty bad at times, but the acting is alright and the special effects are pretty good. it is cheaply filmed at parts, but i think everyone did an acceptable job. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review sean s Not a bad movie. Not a great movie, but it was kind of interesting and well done for the most part. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Too mother****ing creepy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member It is a fairly standard horror movie format - place a group of people in jeopardy, in this case down a coal mine that has a caved-in entrance. Then imply that there may be a supernatural, malevolent presence in the mine, something to do with 19 dead miners from a century past. A mine is dark, so of course this gives the director every opportunity to suddenly show a hideous face up close when you are least expecting it, with accompanying loud crescendos to make you jump out of your skin. I hate these kinds of movies that take advantage of your natural flight\fight response. They are manipulating a basic human reaction to sudden danger. Maybe horror movie aficionados love that frisson of adrenaline. I watched it because as a film enthusiast I should at least try a horror every now and then (I also had to endure the excellent original Japanese 'The Ring', which scared the pants off me and 'Paranormal Activity (2009)' which is in a league of its own). But for me watching a horror is like being told to eat sprouts as a kid because they are good for you. Decent enough for its genre though, but following a standard formula. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review andy f This isn't bad. At times claustrophobic, at times suspenseful and has the occasional scare. The acting is good as well. If you love terror down the mines as we do, you may like this!
