Whatever tension the pic manages to build ... is mostly undercut by the recurring appearance of the fish and by the generally overemphatic performances of the human cast ... Go to Full Review

As shrill as it often is, the film's situational peril makes otherwise unlikable characters sympathetic, or maybe just sympathetic enough. Go to Full Review

A proudly lowbrow, low-budget monster movie that sees nothing wrong with the cheap-and-dirty shortcuts of yesteryear. Go to Full Review

Beneath is a shrewd morality experiment that asks its audience a difficult question — what would they do if they were in the same boat — on top of showing what happens when baser instincts supersede compassion. Go to Full Review

It's all so stupefyingly disconnected from any actual human experience it almost maybe sort of spins back around on itself Go to Full Review

An entertaining B grade creature feature that's potentially better made than those forgotten films of yore it may bring to mind. Go to Full Review

Wayne K Oct 10 Beneath from 2013, not to be confused with Beneath from 2013 (!?) is one of the most mainstream films Larry Fessenden has made, at least of the ones I’ve seen. It both looks and feels like the kind of horror films we got in the noughties, replete with actors that seemed to be everywhere at the time but only ended up doing the same kind of films over and over again. It feels like it was made by someone who watched Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever and thought ‘I wanna do that, but with better writing and significantly less douchy characters.’ Fessenden does a great job creating an atmosphere of claustrophobia, and on a lake somehow, using the camera work to make the odds seem truly insurmountable. The characters aren’t the best, but I can recall their names and tell them apart, and I didn’t get invested in what they were going through. On the surface it’s a story of friends trying desperately to survive, but below that it’s a demonstration of the pettiness and selfishness of human begins, especially in life-or-death situations. For all its faults it’s a very watchable movie that’s short enough to not outstay it’s welcome. It doesn’t do anything that hasn’t been done better elsewhere, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a viewing anyway. Laughable dialogue, effects and 'tension'. Worth a watch to see how bad bad can be See more Julian S @akajulianscott Feb 9 An old-school-style aquatic monster flick that doesn’t need its oversized, absurd-looking fish, as the real horrors come from the monstrous behavior of the people on the boat. Still, it’s not bad overall.
