Time Out A textbook classic to which the years have not been kind. Oct 23, 2007 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader It remains a unique and sometimes inspired exercise in style for its own sake. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row This is pure cinema, a work of visual rapture that often feels like stepping into a time machine, inviting us into a world long since past. david f Important and historic but might not fit modern expectations for what a film should be. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An incredible so called 'City Film' that unforgettable catches a single day in Berlin from the mid 1920's (which is very different to today ie post WWII Berlin) The shots are so well defined & the interesting places that where filmed makes this a surreal wonderful experience. It really takes you on a adventure & shows the simple & soaring beauty of the old days of Berlin. Not for everyone but I thought a wonderful delight. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A visually compelling portrayal of this all-engulfing juggernaut. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting early documentary that allows you to experience early 20th century Berlin. That being said as with most early silent documentaries it is very tedious and hard to sit through. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member The city symphony feature film masterpiece that anticipated Dziga Vertov's The Man With the Movie Camera, although the two movies are quite different, because Ruttmann's work is more centred on the images he takes themselves than on the filmmaking process and the analogic editing. In this film we truly get a genuine feel of the movement of a whole city, the passing of time and the advancement in the industrial and social lifestyle of the people. With the wonderful original soundtrack finally restored, the film is just a magnificent experience. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member a great exercise in flanerie! the shots composed were absolutely breathtaking, and the soundtrack, by basing itself in the sounds of the city definitely helped create the feel of a symphony of the city. the film definitely helped showcase the ordinary in a new, fascinating way.
