      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Despite being set at an amusement park, Beverly Hills Cop III forgets to have any fun as it churns out uninspired violence and witless gags, with an uncharacteristically lethargic Eddie Murphy not helping matters.

Simon R Really disappointing film. Poor directing. The first two were great but the change in director wrecked this trilogy. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Farah R A vapid sequel that brings back Eddie Murphy for another round of mindless violence as Detective Axel Foley, Beverly Hills Cop 3 is a major disappointment. While some parts are funny, it doesn't make up for the wild plot or nonsensical theme park stunt. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review Matthew D John Landis misses everything that made Beverly Hills Cop I & II fun. Director John Landis' crime action-comedy Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) is an absolute drag. For a comedy that is only 105 minutes long, it feels twice that length. There's hardly any jokes for one, and the ones here barely land half the time. There's a couple of brief shootouts, but then the awful and obvious story commences that feels like a half baked sendup of Universal Theme Parks and Disneyland that's so tired. I forgot how much I hated this originally, but it's even worse after rewatching the perfect first two films. Landis was a hack director with little charm as a director and no visual style that is so obvious after revisiting Tony Scott's style for Beverly Hills Cop II. It has awful direction with no sense of pacing and Landis only gets saved by the cast, the few times they show any effort. Writer Steven E. de Souza's terrible pits Axel Foley thwarting money counterfeiters in a theme park as he seeks revenge for the crook that killed his boss. The boss is there is no mystery as to the entire investigation as you immediately figure out what is happening. All the turncoats are obvious and there's no wit to the scarce amount of humor here. The casting for the villain is terrible as they should have just used John Saxon as the main bad guy versus the other forgettable actor. Eddie Murphy looks bored and like he doesn't want to be there. Beverly Hills Cop III was clearly a gig for a bunch of money. Judge Reinhold is barely in this one and doesn't help Eddie ever. He looks dead from the neck up too. They could not even get Taggart back. Nile Rodgers makes the most dated and heinously bad film score that sounds like a farting keyboard. The main "Axel F" theme is nowhere to be heard until the very end with Rodgers' terrible breakbeat version as a simple remix. The action is all bad stunt doubles and the practical effects are marred by ugly background CGI. They spent all this money on cute theme park attractions, only for Axel not to make any jokes about them or use them to cleverly defeat opponents, so why this setting? In short, Beverly Hills Cop III is one of the worst sequels in movie history. What a disgraceful way to end this series. Oh wait, Eddie Murphy is making another awful sequel this very year. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review Brianna B Boy, was this movie really bad Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Max N Entertaining movie. But not a great one. Beverly Hills Cop 3 is not as bad as people made it out to be. But there was a lot about this movie that was off. I would consider this nothing more than a guilty pleasure. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/09/23 Full Review Joel H I didn't hate Beverly Hills Cop 3 as much as many other seem to hate it. Yes, Eddie Murphy is much more subdued in his role as Axel Foley this time. But I kind of like that he isn't as goofy and slapstick-y as he was in the other movies. It made it feel more believable. And no, this sequel isn't as humorous as the other two. In fact, the biggest laughs I had were at stupid choices they made while writing the screenplay. However, I didn't think the second movie was very funny and they were really trying to be then. Still, aside from some impressive stunt work, Beverly Hills Cop 3 is kind of ridiculous. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Anderson Jones Detroit Free Press Wholly unsatisfying, we know every twist, turn and loop-de-loop of Beverly Hills Cop III. This is like a Wonder World rollercoaster we've been on way too many times. And it may be time for Eddie to get off and explore the rest of the park.
