      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Beyond the Reach promises goofy genre pleasures, but fails to deliver, losing the viewer -- and a villainous turn from Michael Douglas -- in a misguided story that stumbles to the finish. Read critic reviews

Michael Douglas single-handedly carries this survival thriller against a pretty forgettable protagonist, whose relationship is initially rammed down our throats, for lack of a real background. The film looks gorgeous, the landscapes are fantastic, and there are moments of suspense. But at times, the chase is so cartoonishly random, you almost feel as if you're in a Roadrunner show. The solution is pretty disappointing. What remains is Douglas being great at what he does.

What promises to be a strong suspense story disappoints in delivering as an equally strong conclusion proves to be beyond the reach of the filmmaker. Nevertheless, there is some fine cinematography and decent script writing in the first two thirds of the film. Acting is adequate despite Douglas' at-times hammy performance.
