      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Blade of the Immortal highlights Takashi Miike's flair for balletic violence, making up what it lacks in strict originality with rich characterizations and kinetic thrills.

Rated: 4/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times An imaginative, gory, frenetic samurai carve-em-up, there's an irresistible energy about the project from the get-go. Rated: 4/5 Dec 11, 2017 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) It's a stylish slash fest, which delivers visceral thrills along with quietly striking moments of beauty. Rated: 3/5 Dec 10, 2017 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times A landmark film in a helter-skelter career, Blade of the Immortal proves beyond any doubt that Miike is a master of action, mayhem and storytelling. IlCreatoreN5 B action-packed film, perfect for those who want to see a gore-packed samurai film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Paul W Good clean fun. A bit too long for a movie of this kind though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/07/23 Full Review Georgan G If you enjoy samurai fighting this is the film for you. In fact, this is nearly 100% about fighting. The fantasy angle of being immortal is interesting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review Adam T I made it like a half an hour. I can't believe the reviews this got. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. The costumes, the acting, the dialogue, the special effects, it's all just so awful. I like campy samurai movies but ugh, this is just terrible. There are so many better samurai movies out there. If you want a more recent samurai epic, check out 13 assassins, also directed by Takashi Miike. It's a much better use of your time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/23/23 Full Review ChrisCSH Takashi Miike's mind blowing blood soaked vision of the manga of the same name "Blade of the Immortal" is over the top and full of blood gushing excitement. But perhaps the one and only thing to hold the film back is the film is a tad to long and slightly repetitive but with that it's still an entertaining two hours. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/22 Full Review Adam P It had a dark comedy in its bones, and though it dipped into those waters occasionally, I feel it was a missed opportunity. Bloody, over-the-top action with a healthy dose of melodrama and tragedy, I just feel like it could have been more. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
