Wendy Ide Observer (UK) [A] smart little thriller. Rated: 3/5 Jan 7, 2024 Full Review Phil Hoad Guardian With some flashes of inspired direction, like an upwards through-the-typewriter shot, this hybrid of fastidious huis clos thriller and trauma drama at least has an in-progress human energy and scope. Rated: 3/5 Oct 30, 2023 Full Review Luke Y. Thompson AV Club When the all-important moment of catharsis that every good scary movie requires comes around, it’s palpable. But writers, and other creative types, just might feel it a little bit extra. Sep 19, 2022 Full Review Jayne Nelson Radio Times It's just a pity that the pace is so glacial and the novel's subject matter, acted out alongside the main plot, is deeply unpleasant to engage with. Rated: 3/5 Sep 13, 2024 Full Review Kat Hughes THN A well devised tale of the struggle to create, Blank places woman and machine in uncomfortable circumstances with interesting results. Rated: 3/5 Jan 9, 2024 Full Review Paul Mount Starburst Blank descends slightly into histrionics in its last act, but this is still a smart, well-considered spin on what is now well-trodden material and, brought to the screen on a relatively small budget, is something of a low-key triumph. Ken D A great idea turned out to be over 70 minutes of repetive and boring routines with no advancement of the plot. The attempt to link Claire’s life with her book was a failure and the ending was both obvious and absolutely pathetic. How this ever got commissioned is beyond me. I think the movie was probably inspired by Ex Machina which is a far superior film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Gerald H interesting, well played Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Stuart B I do love films that are set in limited locations and Blank is a very clever film that reminds us that technology is great, until it isn't great. The performances are great especially its two leads Rachel Shelley and Heida Reed who's chess game of wits is of course the centrepiece of the film. We also are treated to the onscreen envisioning of the book that Claire is writing featuring Helen (played by Rebecca Clare Evans) and Young Claire (played by Annie Cusselle) which have that flashback feeling for the viewer) Beautifully shot and directed, if you are craving for an Ex-Machina type movie, then I do highly recommend Blank. Now I'm now going to turn off all my smart devices in case they lock me in my house! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Pepper T This is a really good concept and looks like it was well-written. The execution was not so good. Leaden direction with some cringeworthy acting meant a boring viewing experience. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/24/23 Full Review Ron R Surprisingly Good Movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/24/23 Full Review Ripper J This movie is what is sometimes referred to as a slow burn, which is a show/movie that has very little story and doesn't know how to add world building or character development material. So instead it's a string of long, boring, drawn out scenes. Characters walking across the set, cars driving down a road, characters staring, and long pauses in dialogue. They are essentially trying to turn a short story into a novel by adding pages and pages of pointless filler material. A story that unfolds slowly can work, but it requires interesting characters and an intriguing premise to make up for plodding along. That is not this movie. This movie is trying to be a metaphor for the writer feeling like there's a script trapped inside their word processor. I think this movie would have been better left inside.
