Critics Consensus

A piece of lovely dreck, The Blue Lagoon is a naughty fantasy that's also too chaste to be truly entertaining.

Michael Blowen Boston Globe The Blue Lagoon is closer to Robinson Crusoe Goes Club Med than to its original source. It's a fantasy island conceived at poolside in Beverly Hills and executed by tourists to the Fiji Islands. Shallow water, indeed. Apr 28, 2018 Full Review Judith Martin Washington Post There have come to be certain conventions of the genre, and it's an annoyance that The Blue Lagoon keeps violating them. Feb 6, 2018 Full Review Gary Arnold Washington Post "The Blue Lagoon" is a plump sitting duck, waiting to be roasted by sarcastic spectators. Oct 17, 2017 Full Review Larry Wegner OUT FRONT Magazine (Denver) The Blue Lagoon is a lovely story, but even more, it's a story about love. May 8, 2023 Full Review Ginger Varney L.A. Weekly Yes, the cinematography by Nestor Alamendros leaves you breathless, but the content makes your kids the same old stupid. Jan 4, 2021 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins There's a goofiness surrounding the whole ordeal, primarily due to the scripting and acting; the dialogue is mediocre and the performances aren't terribly convincing. Annabelle F such a good movie literally my favourite ever!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Amina A A silly erotic fantasy that will hold attention for a while and then disappoint on all counts. The ending was terrible. Not a typical tragedy but so much emotion left hanging, too much to be explained at the end. Don't watch Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review sigrun n Well, I feel like the new critics fail to see the beauty in how little is said… people complaining about a childish script, while these are, in the movie children stranded alone… they get help in the beginning, but how can they language mature, if they are isolated… There are not too many lines in this movie, leaving lots up for interpretation. Like if the camera was pointet at that rock for a reason for example, and you sort of have to be able to interpret a little if this is going to be an enjoyable movie. It is an old movie, and of course that old movie charm is present, making this a nostalgic watch either way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Vidyut I Could pick 0 if there was an option. Despite Randal Kleiser being an absolutely great Director, this is one of his worst movies. You can tell the hard work put into the making and acting of the film. The music and filming were great, but the actual concept not my favorite. Only recommend watching it to get in the mood or roleplay. Not worth a 2 hour watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review CodyZamboni Z Movie is stupid, dumb, poorly acted, and goes nowhere, That said, Brooke Shields is soooo stunningly beautiful, She kept me watching. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Mike P An X-rated Gilligan's Island, brought to us by the director of Grease...And the movie basically fantasizes about a Garden of Eden scenario between it's leads... 15 year old superstar Brooke Shields, and 18 year old Christopher Atkins; her permed Prince-Adonis...And they're two shipwrecked teens; recreating Paradise on a primitive Caribbean island. And these days the movie is very cringe; with its nude under-age actors. But the movie would have been bad anyway; even if the actors were in their twenties. (See the sequel if you don't believe me!)...Because the dialogue of Blue Lagoon is sophomoric; the acting is weak; and none of this really works. (In spite of the fact that it was a blockbuster. But this wasn't the first lousy blockbuster to hit the theaters, that's for sure!) This movie wasn't really TRYING to be good anyway; it was trying to be titillating and popular; a cheap, soft-focus, Harlequin Romance type potboiler for High Schoolers. So I definitely DON'T recommend this. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
