But the more it progresses, the more inconsistent it feels with its own plot. In the meantime nothing about it is scary or even mildly disturbing. At least not more than the protagonist's moral degeneration by the end of the film. The premise—a supernatural game forcing people into deadly choices—could have easily supported a much darker, more intense R-rated direction. Instead, it feels restrained and predictable, never pushing the concept far enough to create real tension or fear. The film relies heavily on familiar jump scares and teenage drama, but the stakes rarely feel convincing. Characters are written thinly, making it hard to care about their fates, and the rules of the game feel inconsistent just when they need to be most compelling. Instead of building dread, it often feels repetitive and unintentionally silly. With a more mature tone and stronger writing, this could’ve been a genuinely disturbing horror film. Good acting with the characters mostly having distinctive personalities. The ending is mildly surprising, and Lucy Hale has proven herself to be equally good at playing a scream queen or as the star of rom-coms.
