Ted B 4.0 stars; As you can tell by my rating, I really love those hard-boiled, tough detective pulp fiction movies. There isn't anything really special about this particular movie other than it did a good job in its genre. Lawrence Tierney did A little above an okay job playing a Philip Marlowe/Nick Charles type of detective. Although in this case, he plays a fired police detective versus a hired private detective. However, the gumshoe process is the same. We travel down the road of false suspects and other red herrings before we get to the mystery solution. I appreciate the 1930's and 1940's versions of this genre versus today's. Their detectives are totally uncompromised and unapologetic about their investigative process. They tend to use their fists more than clever words and phrases to catch the culprit. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review j f RKO B’s rule! Add Priscilla Lane, Lawrence Tierney, and Robert Fleischer, you got a winning combination. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Stu B A good, traditional detective flick starring veteran movie tough guy Lawrence Tierney as an L.A. cop, recently fired for roughing up some bad guys, who is framed for murder and sets out to learn who's behind it. Some of the '40s-era dialogue snaps and crackles, Tierney is as steely-eyed and square- jawed as ever, the noirish imagery looks great, and the fight scene at the end is every bit as rock-'em-sock-'em as you would expect it to be...but the movie's real highlight is Priscilla Lane as Tierney's pint-sized, tomboyish (and awfully funny) gal pal/sidekick who helps him every step of the way. (She's the only one who even comes close to drawing out the hard-boiled Tierney's soft side.) No-frills suspense and completely entertaining. Worth checking out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Someone should consider making a movie about Lawrence Tierney's combustible life. He clearly had acting chops, but his booze fueled behavior got him into trouble and he never would fulfill any chance of being an A-movie star. Nonetheless, his B-movie work is worth your time and I might start with this noir directed by a then young director, Richard Fleischer, who'd go on to make several notable movies.
