Catey Sullivan Chicago Reader Books of Blood doesn't pass the horror test... Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 23, 2020 Full Review Amy Nicholson New York Times Barker's books were confettied and assembled by leaf blower, along with a few pilfered pages from Jordan Peele Rated: C- Oct 21, 2020 Full Review Peter Debruge Variety With a certain kind of horror, a laugh's as good as a scream, and "Books of Blood" delivers plenty of the former. Oct 8, 2020 Full Review Joe Lipsett Anatomy of a Scream Podcast Network A visually and narratively bland adaptation of two of Clive Barker's books of blood stories. The anthology format is reminiscent of Trick r'Treat (but inferior) and the decision to place the Jenna character at the center is perplexing. Apr 16, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies While there’s nothing particularly terrible about “Books of Blood”, there’s nothing especially memorable as well. That’s because none of the characters get the treatment they need to stand out. Jens B 🎃 It's true: This doesn't have much in common with Clive Barker's Books of Blood. It's missing the violence, sex, SM, desire, and grime. Instead, Books of Blood feels more like a Tales from the Crypt film. Three moral stories are told, all somehow intertwined. 🩸 If you set aside all expectations as much as possible, you'll get a decent horror offering. Especially in the first two stories, there are a few above-average moments. So I can't complain that I had to watch this film. I was entertained, but in a week, I won't remember Books of Blood. It's average VOD fare that squanders a lot of potential. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review inta k Circularity of the story gave answers to open questions. Interesting ball of storythreads. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review James B My hopes weren't high for this film but I am blown away by how good it is. I've read the book of blood and I love it and the second adaptation of it is amazing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/29/24 Full Review Ruud T It has a good horror story in it, but sometimes it is unclear what/why is happening. The end is with questions left. Good, but not at all. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review Aaron D I thought this was great compared to most horror films there was none of that hello is anyone there bs. This was actually believable and the main actress with the mental disorder was brilliant 👏 great movie I thought. When she went back to house at the end I had to laugh 😅 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review The S As I started watching it, I was hoping for a movie with twists and maybe some depth. The whole plot twist reveals itself around the middle of the story and the end is weak, lackluster. Some of the visuals are great, some of them are awful, almost comical. The sound design is ok at best, trying way too hard to create tension from scratch. Eventually there was some form of tension, but sadly the movie and its characters are predictable and uninteresting. Jumpscares are there for the experience, but they are placed in a way, they just cannot work as intended. The last part of the movie feels way too fast (hasted) and lack of any detail or meaning. I gave it two stars, because I like some visual elements. I watched it on D+ and I still want my money back. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
