BRAMAYUGAM is a very atmospheric folk horror film that takes us into Kerala’s dark ages and that has more to show than just a fantastic Mammootty in the lead. Go to Full Review
Rohan Naahar The Indian Express 02/21/2024
A wickedly deceptive film that aims to subvert every theme it tackles — gender, caste, the conventions of horror cinema — director Rahul Sadasivan’s Bramayugam is perhaps the most nihilistic mainstream Indian movie in years. Go to Full Review

Behind the gloss and beyond an in-form Mammootty, Bramayugam is not scary despite its promising atmospherics. It is also flimsy ... until it begins to lay out its caste politics. The film’s allegorical take on caste proves to be muddled and insensitive. Go to Full Review

It blends mythic folklore and masterful storytelling with philosophical underpinnings. The BGM is great too. Set in 17th century Kerala, a singer by a twist of fate reaches the doorstep of an unkempt mansion having only two inhabitants. As the story unravels, the singer finds out that he is unable to leave that place even if he tries. The lord of the mansion feeds on the fear of the other two and hence they are his slaves and he is the only master. There are some points to ponder: The men willingly enter into servitude and pawn their time in a game they cannot win by their own volition. Some analogies are shown: the spider craftfully weaves its web and waits for the flies. There are many interesting questions raised: why do people accept servitude? Morals are required for creating a just society but if God does not call upon us during need, morals die and power wins and there will be only be Bramayugam. Instead of being the refuge he had hope to find, he is instead held captive by the lord of the house, a cruel man named Potti (Mammootty). Mammootty has been in over 400 films and this is the first one I've seen. He plays his part of villain both menacing and exaggerated. I loved encountering folklore with which I was unfamiliar. This is a gothic tale with a decaying mansion, mythic evil, and a dreamlike tone set in India instead of Europe. It's biggest failing is it's length. Far too long to stay engaging in one sitting. I had to split it up. See more Read all reviews
