The shooting of Franco Maresco’s movie about Carmelo Bene are abruptly halted after yet another incident on set. Pulling the plug is producer Andrea Occhipinti, exasperated by endless takes and constant delays. On his part, the director of Belluscone and The Mafia Is No Longer What It Used to Be accuses the production of “filmicide,” then disappears without a trace. Trying to mend the rift is a friend of Maresco’s, who calls on everyone involved in the venture to bear witness -- an investigation that becomes an opportunity to retrace the personality and ideas of the most corrosive and apocalyptic auteur in Italian cinema. And what if, far from everything and everyone, Maresco were secretly finishing his film -- now “the only way to give shape to the rage and horror I feel for this shitty world”?

Guy Lodge Variety The general antic abrasiveness of Maresco’s comic style is clear even when the punchlines are not: At nearly two hours, it’s a progressively wearying exercise. Sep 5, 2025 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com For those who know nothing about Maresco or his body of work, Bravo Bene! strangely succeeds as a documentary biopic in orienting the audience’s understanding of the man, at least as a director who has had a formidable career in the Italian film industry. Rated: 4/5 Sep 9, 2025 Full Review Josh Parham Next Best Picture For those in the know, this could be an engrossing look at an intriguing artist as he finds an avenue to create a special work. But many will struggle to find value, instead finding this piece to be a tedious endeavor. Rated: 5/10 Sep 6, 2025 Full Review Lee Marshall Screen International Maresco’s relentless placing of himself at the centre of the film may be another satirical tactic. But it still becomes a little wearing... Still, there are moments of priceless comedy. Sep 5, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews
