Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online was mostly shocked by Vince Vaughan, who showed me for the first time that he wasn't the long-delayed immature frat boy he so often plays, but actually an imperfect hilarious, yet often silly, character who's main flaw is his selfishness. Rated: B Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Philip French Guardian This is that branch of the romantic comedy known as 'a relationship movie', but generally short on witty lines and amusing incidents. Jul 22, 2006 Full Review Tony Horkins Empire Magazine The Break-Up doesn't turn the rom-com on its head, but with its focus on the darker side of love manages to gently tip it on its side. Rated: 3/5 Jul 22, 2006 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site One feels a little frightened for Anniston's character on occasion. The misogynistic tone of the script is palpable. Feb 14, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse This is a perfect date movie if you plan on dumping the person you're with when the movie is over. Rated: 2/5 Jan 31, 2021 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens So, pick a side, any side. We all know that breaking up is hard to do. You can at least do it with laughter with The Break Up. Ed R One of more of the depressing romantic comedies you'll watch. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/25/25 Full Review Mickey M. Really hard to get into it with all the yelling, screaming and hatefulness. Hard to believe these 2 could ever be a couple, and we’ve already seen this in War of the Roses. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/24/25 Full Review Andrew M This is a top of the list Rom-com that mixes quick witted humor with real-life blond spots that plague a relationship. You’re on a ride watching their life build up and fall apart, and almost getting a lesson along the way. Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston are excellent in their roles and have real chemistry. The beginning of the movie was clunky but that is my only real gripe for what is otherwise a very watchable and entertaining rom-com. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/25 Full Review sofia B A great wakeup call. I also love the actors Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/29/25 Full Review Carla V I think this movie was deeply misunderstood. It is a rom-com, but not the typical silly one that relies on foolishness or absurdity to make people laugh. As someone who has been in a long-term relationship where both partners were too immature to handle problems or unmet expectations properly, I thought it portrayed that dynamic perfectly—spiraling to the point where you no longer know how to go back. It is deep, sweet, and also instructive, and both Aniston’s and Vaughn’s performances were right on point. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/01/25 Full Review Audience Member Well, guess I'll have to be the contrarian here. I absolutely Loved this movie. I actually paid to own it on Prime. Vaughn is great and those who think all he does is spitfire delivery are dim. He pulls off great nuance in anxiety and awkwardness. Aniston was also awesome, though you'd expect her to be. The story- Fantastic. All of the little things they were going through in their relationship are all things people tend to go through. Not sure when to do what, did something but shouldn't have- it was a template for the natural strife that comes from living with someone else. I loved the ending as well. There is some humor here but I wouldn't call this a rom-com and those who did are dipshits. It's a break-up movie with a touch of reconciliation at the end- that's all.
