Ben Russell (Chandler Riggs), an unemployed yet ambitious 24-year-old, brings his girlfriend Cassie (Samantha Isler) from Los Angeles to his rural Oregon hometown to meet his parents and siblings for the first time and spend Christmas with his family: his goofy dad Kirby (James Urbaniak), loving but stern mom Mia (Brook Hogan), aspiring vlogger younger sister Liz (Carly Stewart), and enigmatic deadbeat older brother Gordon (Jacob Wysocki). The arrival is bumpy, and the family's dynamic unearths some internal conflict Cassie is having with her relationship with Ben. A late night conversation between the couple turns into a breakup, and Cassie determines she should go home for Christmas after all. But due to the winter weather and remote rural location, Cassie learns she is unable to travel. She becomes stuck with her newly minted ex's family for the rest of the holiday.

Rudy Valdez Willamette Week Though this is technically a holiday film, Breakup Season really works at any time of year. Dec 18, 2024 Full Review Elisa Guimarães Collider Breakup Season is a comfy watch that does a lot with very little and will surely find its way into your heart, even if its backgrounds are a little too sparse and its lighting a little too saturated. Kerry C This is a sweet take on a Christmas movie — more authentic and sometimes more enjoyably cringey than your usual holiday rom-com. Because who hasn’t gone through a breakup and had to deal with the ensuing awkwardness? We watched on demand with both young and old in our family — the best part was when our 73yo grandma commented during an intimate scene, “Oh, she is clearly not into it, he should stop.” 😂 Kudos to the writer and cast — it was all believable and well done and I have been recommending it to all. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Joseph C This is not a movie with deep social impact. However, it's always nice to feel good leaving the movie. Who has not faced the pressures of a family Christmas. While they are supposed to be wonderful, there are landmines everywhere. The secret is to survive without permanent damage and move on. That's the message here. I felt better after watching it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Jasper B Put this one on the nice list for the holidays! A very strong & cozy debut just in time for the season. Such intelligent, lived-in writing. The ghosts of relationships present, past & future sharing wisdom, and keeping each other warm in the Oregon winter. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Jules W This is everything I need and want in a Christmas movie without being cheesy and Hallmarky. So funny and heartwarming, just a treasure that you won’t want to miss. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Sven S Hilariously awkward. 100% believable story, excellent casting! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Lola S this was a good watch! although, i wish there were less silent/quiet moments although it did set the tone but most of the time it came off a bit too much. the family trope was so relatable. could be a Christmas classic. not to forget, amazing performance by everyone! this would be a banger for a double feature with happiest season starring kristen stewart.
