At the start of the New Year, 32-year-old Bridget (Renée Zellweger) decides it's time to take control of her life -- and start keeping a diary. Now, the most provocative, erotic and hysterical book on her bedside table is the one she's writing. With a taste for adventure, and an opinion on every subject - from exercise to men to food to sex and everything in between - she's turning the page on a whole new life.

Sadly, the film is tragically, depressingly, awfully of its time... The transition to screen stripped out much of Fielding's irony, nuance and cynicism. Go to Full Review

It's fine, for an evening, if you just want to pack your troubles in an old kit bag. Go to Full Review

That Zellweger can make us believe in Bridget's heaving inner world is par for the course -- she's a supremely talented comic actress. That she was willing to risk her own status as sex symbol by looking like an everywoman is really impressive. Go to Full Review

24 years on, there's still a lot to love about Sharon Maguire's charming British comedy, even after all the discourse. Go to Full Review

Frankly, it's a rather boring, simplistic, humorless romantic comedy that often remains grounded in a series of clichés that take away resonance from the diary of the indecisive thirty-something played by Renée Zellweger. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

A film centred on an imperfect woman who has troubled relationships, but who throughout the story learns valuable lessons about love (both towards other people and her own). [Full review in Spanish]. Go to Full Review

Elisa 06/02/2021 Terribly so cheesy and so dated - a portrayal of women as dumb and with a low self-esteem, and entirely dependent on men. An insult to women. That itself adds half a star See more Blu B Sep 1 A Romcom Classic. Zellweger is excellent and the best thing in this. Probably her most iconic role and for good reason. She nails what it's like to be awkward, single, and all the insecurities that come with it. She nails how awkward life can be with love, career, and family and how messy finding your way can be. Far from perfect but filled with charm and lots of consistent laughs. Her friends & parents are good, Firth is good too in a awkward way, and Grant is excellent. Excellent editing too as this moves at a really fast pace through the entire year. We cover so much ground. Family, career, affairs, love triangle, trying to get in better shape and failing, and lots more. What's amazing is how much it bounces between these subplots and somehow makes it all feel like it flows and leads to the next in a very messy, somewhat chaotic, but natural flow without feeling bloated. That's what's really impressive about it. That being said it's still a bit messy from a storytelling perspective and some things feel like they are forgotten at the wayside by the end despite getting so much attention. It does contribute to her character growth but doesn't contribute much to the end if that makes sense. But it really gives authenticity to the journey so I would'nt change it regardless. Really good direction too. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, the director, the franchises other entries, romances, or comedies should give this a shot. See more Read all reviews
