      Critics Consensus

Bogged down in slapstick and silliness, Edge of Reason is a predictable continuation of the Bridget Jones story.

Jonever f It's really disapponting. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Dasha V I felt like this movie underplayed some of what Mark did to upset Bridget. It also had her running back to him to apologize for getting upset over reasonable things!!! It was sad to watch honestly. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/29/23 Full Review KB B It wasn't that good I preferred the 1st one. Don't bother with this one. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/12/23 Full Review Emma C I know everyone always wants to know what happens to the couple once they get together, but here it really wasn't necessary. This is not cosy and heartwarming like the first instalment, it is clunky and embarrassing. As far as I am concerned, there is only 1 Bridget Jones film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/11/23 Full Review donnie m i LOVE the bridget jones movies-no one can do what Renee does-she's hilarious and the music/songs in this movie make you 'feel good' and take you back to when music was 'really good' Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Matthew D It's not nearly as funny or sweet hearted as the original man. Director Beeban Kidron's romantic comedy Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) is inferior to the first movie unfortunately. It can be extremely funny, but there's less jokes overall. It can be quite romantic and cute, but also has strange conflicts just to make drama where there should have just been love between Bridget and Mark. I'm quite glad that Bridget doesn't cheat on Mark, but it does get absurd with her going to Thai jail. This does at least lead to Bridget and several Thai ladies singing Madonna's "Like a Virgin" together. Writers Adam Brooks, Richard Curtis, Helen Fielding, and Andrew Davies find humor in the funniest of places with cute references and clever British wit. I like the romance story in the end, especially since it still feels sweet and sincere. I'm so happy that Bridget still chooses Darcy over Cleaver. I just wish there were more jokes, funnier jokes, and generally more lighthearted rather than feeling like Bridget is strong-arming Darcy so quickly into marriage. The final proposal is so cute though. The big twist involving Rebecca is genius and superbly funny. First of all, I do have a few issues as Madonna's first UK single was "Everybody," not "Holiday" nor "Lucky Star" by the way. I don't know how four different writers could have messed that up. Secondly, why is the entire plot hinged around Bridget being obsessed with getting married and having a baby with Mark Darcy, when they set this movie only after 8 weeks from the first. They've only just started dating, why is this rushed. Darcy loves Bridget as she is, but is obviously too shy and straight laced to say so all the time. Why is the plot centered around Bridget not feeling confident in her body, when in the first movie, Darcy already said he loved her as she was, I mean, that was a major point. There are some issues here. Editor Greg Hayden cuts Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason into a fairly fast paced 108 minutes. It leans heavier into the drama, so it naturally feels slower than the first. Cinematographer Adrian Biddle's medium shots and close-up shots are stunning. He really nails the visual language of the fist movie with a very similar aesthetic. Renée Zellweger is hilarious, pretty, and endearing as Bridget Jones still. She fits right back into place as a lovable, if awkward young lady. I found her relatable and fun with really earnest dramatic skills. Zellweger's comedic timing is still sublime. Colin Firth is very charming and patient in this one as Mark Darcy. Firth feels loving and understanding of Bridget's eccentricities, while caring for her despite her misunderstandings thinking Darcy is cheating. Hugh Grant is as charmingly sleazy in a way only he can be as Daniel Cleaver once more. His flirtations, poetic musings, and fighting with Firth are just a delight to watch. Gemma Jones' perky Mrs. Pamela Jones and Jim Broadbent's depressed Mr. Colin Jones are a riot. Jacinda Barrett is drop dead gorgeous as Rebecca Gillies the lawyer with a secret. I think she should have been in the movie even more, honestly. She's so sweet. Sally Phillips is a scream as the constantly swearing Shazza. Shirley Henderson's squeaky voiced Jude and James Callis' bad advice giving friend Tom are fabulous. I loved seeing the always funny Jessica Stevenson as Magda. Ting-Ting Hu is stunning as the Thai prostitute. Vee Vimolmal is so nice as the Thai girl Phrao in prison. Pui Fan Lee and Melissa Ashworth are also fun as the other main Thai jail girls. Composer Harry Gregson-Williams delivers a beautiful score with really lush melodies. I loved the soundtrack, which features Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and Madonna's "Material Girl." There's tons of fun choices in Bridget Jones' soundtrack. The Darkness' iconic glam rock hit "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" is a fantastic choice for Colin Firth and Hugh Grant's second legendary fight in the fountain. Jany Temime's colorful costumes give Zellweger tons of sexy outfits besides the hideous combinations on purpose. Carmel Jackson's make-up makes everyone in the cast look like supermodels. Overall, I enjoyed Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. I just prefer the first movie. Zellweger, Firth, and Grant are spectacular though!
