63% 16 Reviews Tomatometer 53% 50+ Ratings Audience Score The world knows Britney Spears: performer, artist, icon. But in the last few years, her name has been publicly tied to another, more mysterious term: conservatorship. Britney vs Spears tells the explosive story of Britney’s life and her public and private search for freedom. Featuring years-long investigative work, exclusive interviews and new documents, this Netflix feature film paints a thorough portrait of the pop star’s trajectory from girl next door to a woman trapped by fame and family and her own legal status. It shows Britney’s life without utilizing the traumatic images that have previously defined her. Director Erin Lee Carr (How To Fix a Drug Scandal, Dirty Money) and journalist Jenny Eliscu work to delve deep into the tangled history of the conservatorship that has been in place for over 13 years. The film weaves a shocking timeline of old and new players, secret rendezvous and Britney’s behind the scenes fight for her own autonomy. Text messages and a voicemail as well as new interviews with key players make clear what Britney herself has attested: the full story has yet to be told. Read More Read Less

Morgan D A sad and enraging glimpse into Britney Spears' conservatorship. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/28/22 Full Review Audience Member I only vaguely knew this story before watching the film. The two filmmakers clearly care about Britney and handle sensitive information with great care. I thought the choices they made with the film, using found footage and famous shots of her, in addition to talking heads, brought the story to life. I feel so bad for Britney. She was truly treated abominably and we all watched it and knew something shady was happening, but no one did anything to help her. Hers is really an American tragedy, and like other American saga myths, it has a (thankfully!) happy ending. She is finally free. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Wasnt worth the time. Nothing new... missed a lot of pieces before and after the freeing. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A vivid portrait of what she went through. Britney is one of my most favorite singers of all time and through texts, and calls, and telling of the events, it is one crazy documentary. Apparently her Father may have been trying to get her to Christ and if that is so that is good because Jesus is our only hope. Same to Britney Spears and everyone. However other stuff was going on and she was not being able to be independent enough with other things along with God in her life. Now that the conservatorship is ended, I support her Father trying to tell her The Gospel but she has to be more independent in other ways along with The Lord. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review andy h It's very slow and doesn't offer more than what the Hulu New York Times documentary has already said; just listen to her phone call with the judge to get everything. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This was an underwhelming documentary compared to "Framing Britney". I was annoyed watching the end. They were talking as if these things were brand new information but we all knew those things when the doc was released?? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Alessa Dominguez BuzzFeed News Netflix’s Britney vs. Spears raises lingering questions more directly than even Framing Britney Spears did. Apr 5, 2022 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's willing to have a much more emotional to Britney Spears and how heartbreaking it is to watch her suffer. Oct 4, 2021 Full Review Lisa Kennedy New York Times The greatest lesson of "Britney vs Spears" might be how exploitable the role of conservator can become. Oct 1, 2021 Full Review Olive St. Sauver But Why Tho? A Geek Community [Britney Vs Spears] raises good points but feels like it is missing something unless viewers come into it already aware of certain information. In the increasingly large amount of coverage on the Spears conservatorship, this one is just…okay. Rated: 6/10 Feb 4, 2023 Full Review Milana Vujkov Lola On Film Unfortunately, it does not get any closer to the human being that lives behind that perfect smile than an upset, well-meaning article in a fanzine would. Rated: 2/5 Oct 20, 2021 Full Review Jennifer Green Common Sense Media This is advocacy more than reporting, but if you're just interested in perspectives on what has happened to the star over the last two decades, you'll certainly find them here.
