Martin F It's a dragging movie that says way less than it thinks it does. The movie revolves around three stories, two sets in the present about a couple and their family after their separation, and a third story 50 years in the past in another country about a mother raising her kid with Down syndrome. The mix of those stories is so badly done that you feel like navigating between two different movies as if the director couldn't make a choice. Ultimately, they tried to link all three stories together by using something as lazy as "past lives" and a visit to the medium but the connection was also done too late, we are already bored. The stories are also very repetitive with very few moments to push them forwards. The present timeline is forgettable if it's not for the naked scenes with surprisingly stylish visuals. The past timeline, on the other side, is actually interesting as we learn about the difficulty of raising a child with Down syndrome in the 60's with relatable characters. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review isla s This is a sometimes sad, sometimes touching and certainly thought provoking watch. I'd say its perhaps, at times, more about morals than romance. I thought it was good to see a film tackle the issue of having a child with downs, which is still probably regarded as a bit of a taboo by some. I thought some of the dialogue was almost poetic. There are some sex scenes, so its not for especially young viewers but I wouldn't say it seemed entirely tacky or exploitative. In a number of scenes, we see characters underwater, which I suppose could represent rebirth, or otherwise struggling to stay above water in life, letting or not letting things overwhelm you perhaps. There are two distinct plots present in this film and I found it an intriguing and thoughtful watch that I'd recommend to others. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An emotional film for a mother to watch. Solid film interesting plot Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member One of my favorite movies. Poignant and realistic. You cannot always control who you love, but you can still care about them. The journey of a woman's love. Beautiful movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a movie that tackles love and the confusion around it really well. I really like it, it's one of my favourate movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the kind of movie that initiates a different view in life, very profound film! Dynamic and influential. Truly one of a kind! Jeff Shannon Seattle Times A forgettable film. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 22, 2012 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times It's terribly long and repetitive for so delicately dreamy a diptych, and at times the modern-day story feels like little more than a drawn-out apologia for the wandering male gaze. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 16, 2012 Full Review Kyle Smith New York Post Goes from intriguing to irritating. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 9, 2012 Full Review Q.V. Hough Vague Visages Fortunately for Vallée, both Paradis and Gerrier absolutely own their scenes, thus creating a strange paradox with the opposite storyline full of brilliant visuals/sounds, but forgettable characters. Jun 22, 2023 Full Review Rachel West That Shelf To discuss how the parallel storylines come together would ruin things for anyone who has yet to watch the movie, but their collision course still packs an emotional wallop a decade later.
