Parisian nightclub owner Simone Pistache (Shirley MacLaine) is known for her performances of the can-can, a provocative dance recently outlawed for being immoral. Though her dancing delights patrons to no end, it also attracts the ire of the self-righteous Judge Philippe Forrestier (Louis Jourdan), who aims to punish her. The judge hatches a plot to photograph Simone in the act and ends up falling for her -- much to the chagrin of her boyfriend, handsome lawyer François Durnais (Frank Sinatra).

Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine [The] Broadway hit of a few seasons ago has been processed into a big noisy musical which is pleasant entertainment although several of its top numbers are lacking in zip and sparkle... incongruously mingled in the speech patterns... Rated: C Feb 10, 2010 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Despite the star presence of Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLaine, this is a second-rate musical due to Walter Lang's pedestrian direction but some of Cole Porter's songs are wonderful. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/07/24 Full Review Alec B Sinatra and MacLaine are woefully miscast and the rewrites of the original stage musical are baffling. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review deke p Never saw a bit o it until now 5.17.2022, about 63 years after produced in 1959. Very famous then as Soviet Dictator Khruschev was visiting the US, and the filming of the CAN CAN scenes, and he voiced he was scandalized by the indecency and immodesty. GREAT CAST. IMHO, anything with MAURICE CHEVALIER is worth watching. Also JULIET PROWSE. It got very poor reviews. And I have never even seen it on TV before now. Note to sef: Might watch it again, and payparticular attention to the Alpha thru Omega. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review steve d I don't know if it is the musical or the film but this was terrible. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member 20th-Century Fox adapted Cole Portrer's stage musical to the screen and assigned old reliable Walter Lang to direct it; with an all-star cast and songs like "I Love Paris" and "C'est Magnifique," it should have been much better than the bland, talky film that it turned out to be. The only bright spots are Juliet Prowse and the performance of the title tune. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member What this all boils down to is that "Can-Can" not so much left me disappointed but more under whelmed. It is entertaining enough but only really works here and there with a lot of it be it the humour or musical numbers being quite forgettable.
