Critics Consensus

Cars offers visual treats that more than compensate for its somewhat thinly written story, adding up to a satisfying diversion for younger viewers.

Steven D. Greydanus Decent Films Cars is Pixar's most improbable success to date, a film that could easily have misfired, but somehow does not. Rated: B+ Oct 29, 2008 Full Review Christy Lemire Denver Rocky Mountain News Rips off Doc Hollywood, almost note for note. Rated: C+ Dec 14, 2006 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Smooth, but bland and forgettable. Rated: 2/5 Jul 29, 2006 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s a deceptively simple film that plays with more profundity as you get older and appreciate its themes more. Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This is a very good piece of animation, but given the source, it’s not unreasonable to expect better. Daniel Pimienta Watched it with friends who also grew up with Cars. Great time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Santiago M This movie is more or less something from the trilogy Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Garrett B If you’re a big fan of cars, then you’ll certainly like Cars. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Noah C A fun & nostalgic Disney film that is as a whole very underrated Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Jay W "Cars" holds an interesting spot in the history of Pixar. It isn't the first time the company had a sub-par movie, that honor belongs to "a Bug's Life". But this was the only movie during the Pixar golden age that failed to impress. It lost the Best Animated Picture Oscar to "Happy Feet", making it the only time in the 2000's when Pixar had a film lose it since 2003. It isn't necessarily that the film is bad. It just fails to live up to the high caliber that Pixar set up for themselves. First off, the world they have set up here makes very little sense. It does remind me of playing with hot wheels as a little kid. I would just have the cars do the talking as if they were alive. The world doesn't make too much sense if given even a little bit of thought, but it isn't meant to be the focus. The story would honestly work just as well with human Nascar drivers. That is not a good thing. That means that the movie premise is short sighted or that it doesn't capitalize on its own medium. The story bears a striking resemblance to the Michael J. Fox film "Doc Hollywood". Both involve a cocky protagonist who finds himself stranded in a small town and through their experience with the locals learns to be a better, humbler person. The storyline is pretty basic. The humor, particularly from the comedic relief Mater, voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, is irritating. The animation and voice acting, like usual Pixar style, is really good. I like a good sports movie, and this hits all the usual sports movie beats. The romantic sub plot doesn't work for me, nor the comedic relief. But I do enjoy the change of heart, (or whatever a car has) of our main character, Lightning Mcqueen. I hated the ending as a kid, and I still hate it to this day. It is cliched, cheesy, contrived and just stupid. Not an awful movie, just falls short when compared to the other films in its league. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Andre Santiago R The Movie Is Better than Other Pixar Movies Because I'm the only person who loves Cars And they have some Serious and Suspenseful scenes here but this one is definitely the best Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
