39 S May 29 Jacques Becker directs an extraordinary film, a preview of the coming Nouvelle Vague. -- The acting, particularly Serge Reggiani and Simone Signoret, is perfect. The setting in Belle Époque Paris and the weekend country getaways gives Becker room to bring lightness and frivolity into a harsh morality tale. But it's so beautiful! With the fine camerawork in the dance when Reggiani and Signoret meet, the whirls spin the viewer into the magic of the film. The dark finale is presented with concentrated simplicity. Whether one is a student of film or just wants a pleasant diversion, there is great pleasure and much film history in this masterpiece.. You will be glad you saw it! Simone Signoret absolutely lights up the screen. It is a tragic gangster story told beautifully and stylishly. I will definitely be checking this one out again, everything about it was just right in my opinion. Highly recommended!
