Mike (Daniel Stern) and Jimmy (Dan Aykroyd) are disconsolate after watching their favorite team, the Boston Celtics, lose a game in the NBA finals. They hatch a far-fetched scheme to sabotage Lewis Scott (Damon Wayans), the star of the opposing team, who is known for his love of nightlife, by getting him very drunk -- and thus too hungover to perform in the next game. After the two inadvertently kidnap the player instead, they dither about whether or not to release their captive.

This is a bad time for NBA fans in Boston. Just as their beloved Celtics are about to wrap up a dismal season, with nearly 50 losses and no berth in the playoffs, Hollywood comes out with a comedy about the Celtics that's even worse than the team. Go to Full Review

Celtic Pride supplies predictably lowbrow yocks for jocks, and its rather disturbing racial implications go entirely unacknowledged. Go to Full Review

See more Benjamin B. @TopsyKretts Aug 16 I love this movie! Classic old school comedy!! See more Stephen L Apr 6 If Celtic Pride holds up, it’s just barely - but it does. Dan Aykroyd is great, Daniel Stern is loud, and Damon Wayans holds his own as the selfish NBA star. The plot - two Celtics fans kidnapping an opposing player before Game 7 - is absurd, but the film runs with it. The basketball scenes are solid, the set design has surprising detail and Judd Apatow’s early fingerprints are all over the over-written but ambitious script. It’s far from perfect, but moments like the “bad luck guy” scene still land. Some of the dialogue is repetitive, and the ending doesn’t feel earned, but for a mid-‘90s NBA comedy, it’s fun, specific and occasionally sharp.
