      Critics Consensus

It fails to challenge the well-established conventions of its storyline, but Cemetery Junction benefits from the genuine warmth of its script, as well as its refusal to give in to cheap nostalgia.

G 0 Far far better than the score it's given here. Perhaps as an Englishman I can relate to the story more than the predominantly US audience on Tomatoes, but it's charming, witty and not overly sentimental Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review isla s This is very much a film about mostly working class teenagers in 1970s England. Its written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, so of course the comedy is a fairly blunt, with some moderate/strong sex references and strong language featured but then I suppose that does give it more of an authentic feel. It has a quirky feel to it, with the characters being a bit stereotyped in terms of being 'lairy lads', working class disillusioned people feeling not so motivated to work with 'the system'. That aside, I enjoyed the musical score, with numerous chart its of the 1970s played (including a scene featuring Northern Soul) and I liked that the film had a decent energetic feel to it, which is perhaps a bit ironic given some of the characters seem anything but motivated to do alot - its mostly down to the talk of dreams of a better life and the soundtrack I suppose. If you don't like strong language (including the c-bomb) then this is probably best avoided but otherwise its worth a watch. However, I didn't feel it stood out as an especially memorable film as such, though the characters are alright. I suppose I felt it was a bit too grim but then, to be fair to the writers etc., given the films setting, it wouldn't be authentic if it wasn't. I felt that it had the potential to be made into a TV series - it had the feel of a feature length TV program episode actually, moreso that than a film as such. Of course Merchant and Gervais are well known and very popular for the successful TV series they've made. To me, this was an ok film, not great but not awful - its bleak in one regard but there is a slim sense of hope present as well. I don't think I would especially recommend this as such but there are worse films around. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Gianmarco R Choral personal growth film truly inspired and spot on where all the protagonists have something to say and are all managed to perfection. Ironic the right and deep enough manages to keep a light atmosphere while being very deep and very serious Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/09/22 Full Review clive e I loved it. A gentler Ricky Gervais offering but contains all of his humour, his coarseness and above all his heart. Superb Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member All A Bit Vanilla With Little Of Any Deep Digressions In Exploring Life In England Post-War, Via Small-Town Politics. The Characters Are Likeable Enough. Some Minor Laughs. I Didn't Find Much Was Unpacked Other Than A Good Musical Soundtrack. The Level Of Marksmanship One Might Expect Of Merchant/Gervais Is Not Spot On Here. It Goes The Right Direction, But Not Fantastically So. Deborah Ross The Spectator Gervais now seems adrift in some kind of sub, sub, sub Richard Curtis land, where character, mood and plot are simply thrown out the window and to hell with it. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Anna Smith metro.co.uk Not funny enough to be a great comedy or impactful enough to be an emotive drama, this inoffensive, lightly amusing story drifts along without much sense of purpose.
