      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Cemetery of Splendor gracefully eludes efforts to pin down its meaning while offering patient viewers another gently hypnotic wonder from writer/director Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Nigel Andrews Financial Times What other filmmaker could create a tissue of metaphor, almost musical, from the hum of rotary objects? Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Kate Muir Times (UK) From the Thai arthouse director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whose Uncle Boonmee won the Palme d'Or at Cannes a few years ago, comes another strange swooning dream, Cemetery of Splendour. Rated: 4/5 Oct 10, 2016 Full Review Tony Rayns Sight & Sound Apichatpong's singular method is by now familiar: he looks at present-day realities through a prism of personal and collective memories, refusing to distinguish between the everyday, dream-states and dark fantasies Jun 17, 2016 Full Review Diego Batlle Otroscines.com Cemetery of Splendour is a film in which enjoyment levels increase as the plot progresses and we immerse ourselves in this particular universe. Audience Member My experiences with the work of Weerasethakul seem to be following a similar trajectory: initial viewings tend to prove alienating and frustrating owing to the deeply personal and idiosyncratic nature of his vision. The sounds and visuals are distinctly lush and hypnotic, and they always feel completely tethered to physical reality despite an implicit intimation of something more. This creates an experience of unusual beauty which tends to open its arms to us more evidently with repeated viewings. The story of "Cemetery of Splendor" is mystifying, poetic, meditative, and impenetrable; we set ourselves up for frustration the moment we attempt to tease out the method behind the madness. If, on the other hand, we allow ourselves to simply enter the film on its own terms and go along for the ride, we benefit from a quietly soothing sensory experience like none other. "Cemetery of Splendor" is slowly but surely blossoming into a quiet sanctuary which I'll yearn to revisit in those moments when the hectic and busy pace of life becomes overwhelming, yet the alien nature of the experience and its bizarre quirks will continue to test me if I'm feeling uptight. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member The dreamlike atmosphere created by Weerasethakul's masterful hand is overshadowed by the cryptic development of a story which treasures lie under its hipnotizing looks. It is, indeed, a rewardingly original film, but it is not, unfortunately, an instantly attention catcher. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member get emotions out of you, mixing with some uncomfortable feelings with some joyful, fun emotions at the same time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member I've seen four of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's films and they all seem so interesting. They are unique but sadly you must be in the correct state of mind to enjoy them. It's not easy to hit the right moments, and I missed it. Again. Some soliders got some sort of sleeping illness as they lay around in an hospital. The people caring for them are the ones we get to know here. They are talking and even if they have some interesting features they fail to show them of too often. It got light moments, some OK moments too. A guy takes a dump in the woods. I liked that part. I also enjoyd the DJ Soulscape track during the final scenes. The film give me few scenes to interest me. The story is so vaguely told and it's very, very, slow. I do enjoy the images - many great stills could be taken out of this film, but that's about the few positive things for me here. It's a very open and silent film. Gentle and pretty. I fail to get what the director wants me to get - if there is anything to catch. The human warmth and soul stays strong here, as do the simplicity, but it's simply not enough. 4 out of 10 gigantic color shifting straws. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Esta caminata por el onírico mundo de Weerasethakul resulta esplendorosa, la comprensión de la naturaleza humana es grandiosa y a su vez graciosa. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Anyone with the latest iPhone can go to a construction site to record some heavy machinery digging a hole... In fact there were moments I was in a deeper slumber than the comatosed soldiers!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
