Audience Member An amazing look inside a very private Hassidic sect and the village it has built just north of New York City. The City of Joel, which is a vast neighborhood inside the city of Monroe, NY, is approximately a square mile in area with over 22,000 ultra Orthodox Jews. At the heart of the documentary is a struggle over the annexation of roughly 90% more land by the Village of Joel. Currently, most land in Monroe is zoned for one home per acre. The City of Joel has already scraped almost all existing single-family homes for high-density condos to accommodate its rapidly marrying and multiplying population. The average family size includes 6–8 children. What becomes perfectly clear is that the separation of church and state has already disintegrated in the city of Monroe. Over half the total population of the city is from the City of Joel and it's clear that many elected city officials who aren't Hassidic are trying to appeal to that voting bloc. There are other issues of strict Jewish traditions VS the modern world, factional splits within the City of Joel community, developers who own the land proposed for annexation seeing big dollar signs, and the actual impact from the city of Joel in practical terms regarding traffic and environmental impact.
