After the death of his wife, Mattie Lou, Enoch Rucker Blakeslee (Richard Widmark), an elderly general-store owner, shocks his small, southern town by announcing his marriage to the much younger Love Simpson (Faye Dunaway). She's an outgoing milliner from Baltimore who isn't shy with her sometimes unpopular opinions. Public sentiment is against them, but Enoch's grandson, Will Tweedy (Neil Patrick Harris), supports the marriage, though he soon discovers things aren't quite as they seem.
