      Critics Consensus

The story is not new, but the film gets credit for trying to move away from the genre's cliches. Kirsten Dunst and newcomer Jay Hernandez give believable performances.

Steve D Solid work from all involved including the writing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/29/23 Full Review Julie S Touching and well acted story of young love Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/23/23 Full Review Marivii G It's interesting to re-visit this film now in adulthood having watched multiple times as a teen. Still enjoyed performances by all actors and the themes are still very much relevant. worth exploring for a bit of early 2000s filming style, music and reminiscing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/22 Full Review jordan m For an above-average rated rom-dram I was downright shocked to learn just how many poor creative decisions could be made over a languid 99 minutes. I don't think I've ever disliked the lead girl in a teen romance movie more than this one. There is absolutely no character arc for her - her behavior is irredeemably bad and all the movie ever does is justify her childishness instead of showing her character mature in any real way. Storming away from the guy's family birthday party and then calling him on the phone (!?) down the road to force his attention, insisting on unprotected sex & doing her best to derail what was clearly established to her as accomplishments that won't come about without focus and hard work, all followed by the mindboggling decision to not provide a redemptive arc for what was, as a direct result ultimately the antagonist (!) of the movie. They don't even improve her greasy hair/apathetic look one iota from the start. The director also chose to show high schoolers not just drunk driving, but drunk driving two hours at a time twice in a night (& other unwise behavior) with absolutely no repercussions or thought for how it may influence his teenaged target audience. Just an outstanding failure in critical thinking that ruined the hard work that everyone else surely did on this. What a shame.
