Critics Consensus

Creation Stories lacks the thrilling power of the musical scene it seeks to capture, but its nostalgia for the period has its own entertaining allure.

Dennis Harvey Variety Becomes a hyperventilating “Behind the Music” caricature, all familiar flash and precious little substance. Feb 25, 2022 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times For much of its running time the movie’s reverb knob is set high, and what’s echoing are the movies “Trainspotting” and “24 Hour Party People." Feb 24, 2022 Full Review Kristy Puchko The Playlist A superficial rebellion draped over a disappointingly stale form. Basically, it's like sticking safety pins on a t-shirt pre-torn at The Gap. Jun 30, 2021 Full Review Dallas King Flick Feast Alan McGee made an everlasting impact on British culture. Creation Stories sadly doesn’t make the same impact and is unlikely to live forever in the cinematic zeitgeist. Rated: 2/5 Nov 12, 2022 Full Review Cris Kennedy The Canberra Times (Australia) There is rightly so much cultural history to be packed in and it takes a writer the calibre of Irvine Welsh, McGee's real-life mate, to do it justice. Rated: 3/5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Ferdosa Abdi Screen Rant The adaptation of the fantastical rise and fall of Creation Records' founder attempts to capture the topsy-turvy vibe of its era, but falls short. Shioka O I don't think this is a good film at all, but Ewen Bremner as Alam McGee is so natural. I needed subtitles for the heavy scottish accent. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Damien B CREATION STORIES runs on its own jet-fuel, and is easily this years TRAINSPOTTING meets 24-Hour Party People, but in my opinion better. You can smell the fact that this must be an Irvine Welsh story. Dont listen to the naysayers, if you love movies about music like CONTROL, ROCKETMAN, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, then you should enjoy this. I detest Brit-Pop, but the story behind it is a fascinating thrill ride of a different kind to all the other Rock n Roll/Music biopics out there. Somehow this one slipped silently under the radar, personally i thoroughly enjoyed it and glad i took a chance in it after reading disparaging Reviews that said it was awful. I disagree, see it and judge it on the actual story it shows. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
