Critics Consensus

This heartfelt but incompetent, cliche-ridden sports picture is the cinematic equivalent of an airball.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader A real air ball, so poorly scripted that most of the major plot developments occur offscreen. Dec 26, 2006 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle Writer-director Preston Whitmore II's basketball film is a well-intentioned but utterly clichd slice of Detroit life. Rated: 1/5 Sep 23, 2006 Full Review Tim Cogshell Boxoffice Magazine The inspirational sports movie cliches notwithstanding, Crossover is just bad filmmaking that does not serve either its cast or its audience well. Rated: 2/5 Sep 16, 2006 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com It wasn't unreasonable to hope for a silly, shallow film with exciting basketball, jammin' music and electricity in the air. Rated: 1.0/4.0 Sep 5, 2020 Full Review Tom Meek Boston Phoenix Even though the plot forgoes the formulaic slam-dunk, hackneyed devices, low production values, and the stilted direction (by Preston A. Whitmore II) dribble the ball off the shoe and out of bounds. Rated: 1.5/4 Apr 23, 2009 Full Review Jim Lane Sacramento News & Review The movie is also burdened by some amateurish acting in supporting roles, but Mackie and Jonathan are the real deal, and they get good support from Wayne Brady as a smarmy sports agent. JC's Scatter-Brained T An underrated gem. And a sample of Anthony Mackie's future star power! The rest of the cast really excelled too! Character motivation may have needed an improvement within the writing. But overall a well filmed and edited basketball flick at its lower budget! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Audience Member YOU KNOW ITS NOT GOOD WHEN BIO DOME RATES HIGHER! Haha, it isn't horrible. There were some instances of good acting but whomever wrote the script needs to quit. The director sucked too and it must have been a really low budget. The scenes mostly felt forced and were one take, and it was choppy editing as well. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/12/20 Full Review Audience Member Love it Great basketball movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/20 Full Review Audience Member Amazing Basketball movie message is very strong. Shows perseverance, ambition, friendship and love, Excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Top 2 worst movies ever Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is a flagrant offensive foul on anyone that watches it. The story isn't the LEAST bit believable, and the dialogue doesn't make much sense. There's lots else that doesn't make sense about this movie. Where the random barrels of fire around the underground basketball court came from remains a mystery to me, for example. There was a period of time that this was the lowest rated film on all of IMDB. While I don't think it is fair to call it the worst film ever made, it is terrible (though there is something oddly entertaining about how truly bad it really is). It certainly has many "so bad it's good" moments. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
