Audience Member CRUST. True art. A weird, wacky, witty, whimsical and wholesome movie, that will make you laugh, gasp, cry and cringe, with just the right amount of magic touches and elements to create visceral responses at the perfect moment: interesting angles, clever lighting techniques, adorable and humorous sounds, and the brilliant use of color (or lack thereof). Think Psycho meets Basket Case meets Rubber, but the monster is made out of a pile of dirty socks, and even though it’s a murderous creature that is trying to avenge its owner, it has an almost Gizmo-like sweetness to it and is brought to life with practical effects that remind me of Falkor. I was instantly gripped by every actor. The characters were well cast and in my personal view represent different but extreme manifestations of trauma - in the center of it all, our warrior: the self-doubting, directionless, depressed and anxious loner. The magnetic and charming enigma girl who helps steer him towards self-acceptance. The loud, irate and resentful ex you cannot help but sympathize with, sometimes. The personable, caring, and slightly perverted, alcoholic uncle figure. The fakes, the bullies, the goon, the analyst, the successful prick, the groupies, the over-achiever, the justice seeker, etc. I hope for a sequel so we can see more development in the characters and what happens to them after all those unexpected twists and turns. Without giving too much away, there were times when Vegas startled me more than the actual monster. There is one scene in particular in the backroom that had me check my pulse, and is in my opinion, one of the best performances I have ever seen on screen. I really appreciated the subtle little details throughout the film (whether intended or not) that were both comedic and creative. And then of course: CRUST. I can already envision fans reaching out for the plushie version of this new culture classic cutie on shelves. There is so much more I want to say. This movie will definitely pull at the heart strings and have you on the edge of your seat. I am so glad Sean finally had the opportunity to introduce his genius to the world in this directorial debut. How deep and personal the story is, is evident in this masterpiece. To every single person who worked on this film: your passion for your craft shows and you should all commend yourselves.
