Critics Consensus

Dark Crimes is a rote, unpleasant thriller that fails to parlay its compelling true story and a committed Jim Carrey performance into even modest chills.

Owen Gleiberman Variety The film's pace never deviates from its hushed, deliberate, anticipatory gaze - it's stuck in thriller-foreplay mode. May 23, 2018 Full Review Rex Reed Observer The screenplay teeters between depraved and confusing ("Truth is what you make it. Reality is perception.") Say what? Rated: 1/4 May 18, 2018 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Source material with great dramatic potential. Talented director and screenwriter. Intriguing cast. That's a promising menu - but the end product leaves a sour taste. Rated: 2/4 May 18, 2018 Full Review Vladan Petkovic Cineuropa This production pudding is so artificial that it is hard to believe any of the characters, save for Gainsbourg's. Sep 2, 2020 Full Review Andrew Gaudion THN It's very rare for a film to pretty much have no redeeming features about it, but Dark Crimes is essentially impossible to recommend beyond those who have a morbid curiosity. Rated: 1/5 Aug 30, 2020 Full Review Josh Goller Spectrum Culture There's not even much novelty in seeing Carrey play so aggressively against type in this oppressively artless slog. Ashley X It’s just slow. One of those movies with limited to almost no dialogue. No emotion. Stiff characters with no expression. No real idea of who the character is or what they’re thinking. There’s no clear reason or explanation of what’s going on in each scene. Makes it hard to stay interested. One minute Jim Carey is in someone’s house doing what looks to be a police raid, then the next he’s in another ladies house questioning her. But I have no idea who the lady is, or why he’s questioning her, or why he left the raid, or how he ever got to her house! It literally just skipped to the next scene with no recollection of why. For it to be a mystery film there needs to be some context, some explanation of what’s going on. Especially since it’s not one of those movies you’re easily glued to. This film also has some pretty graphic scenes which lack context and seem to be there only to spark arousal in the viewer, to compensate for everything else the film is lacking. It’s lacking moral direction to be such a serious topic like sex trafficking. I will say Jim Carey did very well but deserved a much more engaging, deceptive, script and plot. I only got through about 30 minutes but maybe I’ll try again another time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Will N Sensible and magnificent performance of Jim Carrey. All actors in this movie was amazing job. Misterious history. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Untoldnews U Love this film. It is a commentary on sex trafficking and the very real crimes that go on daily within the sex industry and drips down into everyday life in families as sex abuse. Watch if you want to understand the world you live in a little more. 5/5 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review Jockecoca B Some how a bit interesting. But the sound is bad, and the storyline is stupid. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review Lily S Extremely misogynistic movie. Surprised Jim Carrey would take a such a callous role where he climaxes while physically abusing a woman who's been trapped in the sex trade for years. Oh. But she turns out to be a murderer of her abuser, so it's fine. Everybody bad. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/28/23 Full Review Thomas Sorry to say, 1,5hours I never get back. Slow movie where the plot is all too obvious. Static scenes and a lack of logic in the characters reasoning and actions. A few moments where Jim shines in his characters demise, but it is rare...
