Critics Consensus

There are certainly worse Westerns, but with Walter Hill behind the camera and a killer cast reporting for duty, Dead for a Dollar should have higher entertainment value.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com There is nothing flashy about Walter Hill’s latest western Dead for a Dollar. Rated: 3/4 Oct 2, 2022 Full Review Mark Keizer AV Club Rarely has so little tension been generated by a hero with so many bad guys lining up to kill him. Rated: C Sep 30, 2022 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture Hill turns... shortcomings into virtues. The picture’s surface austerity and simplicity have a crystallizing effect, drawing our attention to the coldhearted, transactional nature of this world. Sep 30, 2022 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre Paste Magazine Dead for a Dollar threads the needle between traditional Westerns of Boetticher’s ilk and the more revisionist sensibilities that Hill brought to the genre in the run of them he made in the ‘90s. Rated: 7/10 Sep 29, 2023 Full Review Nicholas Bell Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) Sans any significant subtexts to enhance the resilience of its various characters, there’s a sense of going through the motions despite some stand out moments from a sterling Dafoe. annette finally, a good movie with a plotline. the director focused on the story and the characters. you actually cared about the good guys. they didnt waste a ton of time like other movies on CGI and being flashy. back to basics and telling a good story. and they had a bullwhip fighting scene..... cant recall the last time I saw that in a movie. too bad this one is in limited release. I am REALLY glad I saw the trailer on YouTube and decided to go see it on my movie night. HIGHLY suggest you sit and watch this one, especially if you enjoy and miss Unforgiven and movies like that. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/22 Full Review Dennis S Old style Western, good story and good acting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/04/22 Full Review Chris W I've read other reviews and I'm a bit of a buff.plot and story are excellent. Great character build and well rounded.as far as cinematography and direction ,I do believe this film, In its monochromatic layout was Intended to look and feel like the old B and W's of the 40s and 50s.its a nostalgic art piece that should be scrutinized with less angst compared to modern day movie experiences!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Giorgio G What a waste of good actors for such a huge bore, worst of all, ended with the most ridiculous and idiotic shootout. The script is moronic and the script writer also directed it which made it even worse as he kept the whole movie behind a brown color filter (only hell can know his reason for this bullshit), repeating similar angles and shots over and over again. This must be one of the worst Western Movies ever produced. Not even William and Christopher can rescue this. 2/10 points. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/14/24 Full Review Mark B It is a lower budget movie, but Waltz in the lead role is always a pleasure to watch. The characters are bit over the top, Dafoe being one of them. The sets are a bit sparse, making the movie show its limited budget, but overall a good story and I enjoyed it as a streaming movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Alec B It's disappointing that Hill was given such little money for this (speaks ill of our current era) but he mostly makes it work letting his pulpy dialogue do a lot of heavy lifting.
