      Critics Consensus

Professionally made but artistically uninspired, Ed Zwick's story of Jews surviving WWII in the Belarus forest lacks the emotional punch of the actual history.

Sergey B Despite having a mainstream Hollywood actor as the main protagonist, the film succeeds in telling the story of one of the best-known accounts of Jewish resistance against Nazis quite well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/27/24 Full Review Jack B While not the best war movie it's historical significance cannot be measured. This movie is a must see. Craig and the other actors were excellent. Very moving and a great reminder of why persecution and war are no bueno. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Ti M Très bon film qui nous fait réfléchir aux misères de la guerre. Histoire vraie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/30/23 Full Review dave e This is a great true story film about Jewish people hiding and fighting against the Germans in a forest. They create a community and survive on whatever they can eat and build shelters against the harsh winter. The acting is great, the scenery is great and It was gripping and moving. Great film if your into WW2. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/23 Full Review Drew N As a long time WWII buff and student of history, I was wowed and amazed by this true-life story I had never heard about previously. Definitely recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/23 Full Review Ian W Based on a true story, of which I'd read about before. Probably quite a bit of artistic license, but still a very decent film. Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber put in solid performances. I knew it had a 'happy ending', but still had me gripped throughout. Schreiber's volatility is a nice foil to the taciturn intelligence that makes Craig such a great Bond. Rated: 3.5/5 May 8, 2009 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Zwick is ardently devoted to entertainment value, even if it means sacrificing the dignity of his otherwise stimulating story. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It doesn’t take many risks and it never strays too far from the more conventional survival movie path. But it’s a very well made film that captures the look and tone of the period.
