Deliver Us From Evil

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Director Scott Derrickson continues to have a reliably firm grasp on creepy atmosphere, but Deliver Us from Evil's lack of original scares is reflected in its shopworn title.

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint It's hard not to want to avert your eyes and that makes up, marginally, for the otherwise clichéd screenplay. Aug 14, 2019 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association This is a smart blend of cop drama, thriller and paranormal elements. Mar 21, 2017 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The director Scott Derrickson seems uncertain as to whether he is making an exploitation pic intended to give audiences a few fairground-style thrills and frights, or a William Friedkin-style meditation on the nature of evil. Rated: 2/5 Aug 22, 2014 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine Deliver Us From Evil does what it says on the tin and provides a straightforward genre piece. Rated: 6/10 Sep 30, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us From Evil comes across and is masked as a paranormal horror film, but really it’s more of a crime drama about a man who has his own demons... Rated: B Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Alexander Joenks Pajiba Deliver us from Evil is quite a good horror movie, though it falls short of anything like greatness. It has a fantastic cast anchored by the aforementioned Bana and Joel McHale, and features some truly grotesque imagery and tense situations. Oct 18, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Stephen H One of my favorite movies of all-time. So does not deserve either ratings it has. Dark, gritty, cop drama, and good acting. One of Scott Derrickson’s best. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Dylan E Amazing! Power of god always wins. Great movie with fantastic acting and extremely good makeup. The costume designs were very creepy and vivid and the suspense was shocking to say the least. Only complaint I would have is the jump scares were easily foreseen and not very scary. But the movie would have done amazing with out them anyways. I would suggest this to anyone who likes crime and horror! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Seraphina K This is one of the best horror movies ever made, it has a great storyline and the actors are so compelling. Sean Harris and Olivia Horton are by far the most frightening possessed characters I have ever saw on screen, I still get chills thinking of them, I am a huge horror movie fan and have saw a lot of bad horror movies, but this is not one of them, Its spine chilling Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Iron O About as complex as the back of a cereal box. Tried and tired police procedural tropes, mixed in with christian mythology. Predictable at every turn and just plain boring. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review Diana P If you want to spend some time watching a good story with paranormal elements that are within the acceptable range without being grotesque or bloody, this is an option. If you are very picky and want to watch a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is not it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Nathan W I'm a little torn on how to rate this one. I didn't think it was awful, but it definitely didn't do it's source material the justice it deserved. So I'm gonna put those feelings aside, and just review it as though it were any other movie. First off, I thought the entire premise of a person being possessed when they read a phrase was ridiculous. Especially since those rules weren't even followed for most of the characters. The idea of combining themes of a cop drama and possession movie wasn't bad, it just wasn't executed particularly well. You know, there was way too much exposition and not enough of the actual story moving forward... Or being explained. The scene at the end was pretty cool though. Not sure that exorcisms are quite so by-the-book, but Sean Harris did a great job playing the part. Aside form that, there wasn't much that even approached to realm of creepy. Mostly just scenes of lights flickering, wandering around in the dark, and your classic jump scares to pass for suspense. The acting was passable, but mostly lacking in emotion. There wasn't much in the way of interesting dialogue either, and Eric Bana's accent seemed to come and go randomly. But my biggest problem had to do with the plot. Not only was it not very interesting, it didn't make a whole lot of sense what was happening or why. Also, what was the connection with The Doors? I'm not sure why demonic entities would be obsessed with a band from the 60's, and yet here we are. I really wanted to like this movie since I'm a fan of the actual person it's based on, but there were just too many problems to overlook. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
