In the early years of Generalissimo Franco's rise to dictatorship following the Spanish Civil War, playboy Juan (Imanol Arias) juggles two girlfriends, Ana (Ana Belén) and Angela (Ángela Molina). When his upright older brother, Oscar (Eusebio Lázaro), marries Ana, Juan leaves the family business to join Franco's government. A decade later, while Angela's illegitimate son, Juanito (Álvaro Sánchez Prieto), recovers from a life-threatening illness, Juan returns in desperate straits.
