Critics Consensus

With an adherence to YA formula that undercuts its individualistic message, Divergent opens its planned trilogy in disappointingly predictable fashion.

Noah Berlatsky The Atlantic The film is more interesting than the average bad movie precisely because it so gratuitously, and even thematically, fails to fit together. Aug 28, 2019 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint This is a rite-of-passage film, with action, romance and self-realization woven in. But unlike some others of this genre, Divergent is thought-provoking teen sci-fi. Aug 14, 2019 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online ... Wanja S Worst movie I’ve ever watched. Just straight up annoying Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review SkyRo P Divergent, in all fairness and honesty, was a franchise I thought had a tremendous amount of potential. There was a rich world to explore and a story filled with political upheaval, action, and young people forced into roles they hadn’t chosen. But a big part of its struggles came down to its lead — Shailene Woodley, who played Beatrice “Tris” Prior. She just didn’t seem to radiate that “movie star” presence in the way her contemporaries did at the time — Kristen Stewart in Twilight and Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games. It felt like Shailene Woodley was meant to be the face of a huge franchise, but she wasn’t quite up to par with the leading roles that defined her era. To make matters more challenging, her controversy and outspoken lifestyle outside the film seemed to undermine her ability to connect with a large, devoted following. On the other hand, Theo James, who played Tobias “Four” Eaton, was a perfect match for a franchise like this. His performance was strong, charming, and anchored a lot of the dramatic moments. He certainly possessed the potential to become a superstar alongside the leading men of other franchises — someone who could match the popularity of Robert Pattinson in Twilight or Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in The Hunger Games. The direction was proficient — Neil Burger in the first installment and later Robert Schwentke — kept the story moving forward and made sure the action set-pieces were well-executed. Nevertheless, the films missed a huge opportunity to connect more profoundly with the audience. There were points where the story seemed rushed, character relationships were underdeveloped, and the dramatic moments fell a little flat. Still, there were a lot of great aspects to the franchise. As the films progressed, you could feel a deepening of the story’s conflict, a growing maturity in the character journeys, and a more sophisticated view of the world that Veronica Roth originally created in her books. The writing was decent — not perfect — and the action scenes were enjoyable, although I wish there’d been more depth and a bit more risk-taking in the adaptation. Ultimately, Divergent is a franchise I’d say is worth checking out. It may not be perfect, and it certainly fell a bit short of matching the success of its counterparts, but it offers an entertaining story, strong performances from Theo James, and a rich world that, with a bit more depth and a more captivating lead, could have become something truly remarkable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review Hafidz N The film Divergent features several strong characters who excel at conveying emotion and expression. It also presents a unique film concept, particularly through its distinctive world-building and the structured organization within its society. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Audience Member Absolute dogshit of a movie... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Sophia A Here me out, this almost ruined the entire series for me. I started off by reading the books, and loved them. Veronica Roth is a brilliant writer, and continues to bring amazing books to the world. This movie doesn't compare to Roth's writing skills. While the actors are amazing, and play the characters great, they don't reflect the characters looks, looking at least 10 years older than the actual characters. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review Emma F The movie was a bit predictable, but it was still entertaining. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
