How refreshing to see such an outrageous movie still be given so much dimension. Director Ryan Patrick Bartley finds an amazing balance between the broad humor and humanity that there were times I was crying from both laughter AND emotion. The characters are all so over-the-top (fitting for a movie called Divos!) and unique. Even minor characters make a big impact, popping in and out in classic comedy form. The plot twists and turns at every direction, and each moment is more exciting than the next. There's a sequence in the middle that's so shocking and flips the entire movie on its head, you can't help but gasp. And the ending is insane!! The entire cast is great, and Matt Steele is a comedic tour de force! You'd probably LOVE this movie if you like musical theatre or did your plays in school. But even if you don't know much about theatre, you'll still find this movie hysterical. It's an instant classic! It's funny, whimsical, and campy while still addressing deeper issues of inclusion, self-discovery, and the pressures of adolescence. The actors are fantastic (especially the quirky supporting characters), and I was both entertained and invested in the story line. The twist in perspective midway through caught me by surprise and elevated what could have been a standard high-school biopic into the realm of comedy gems like Lucas, Napoleon Dynamite, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
